        HUGH WARREN DESCENDANTS

        First Generation

        1. Hugh1 WARREN Sr., son of Hugh WARREN was probably born in Virginia circa 1725. We don't know exactly when or where Hugh was born, but his known sons were born in Virginia, so it is quite possible that Virginia was also his place of birth. The 1790 Census lists him and his sons, Hugh Jr., James and William in Greenville County, Ninety Six District, South Carolina. Hugh died after 1800 probably in Green County, Kentucky, at about age 75. Hugh Sr. and Hugh Jr. were both listed on the Green County Tax List for 1800.
        He married Sarah POPE.
He sold property to Thomas WARREN February 16, 1787 in 96 District, Craven County, South Carolina. Hugh's wife, Sarah agreed to the sale. The land was located on the West Side of the Pacolet River. In 1791, Thomas WARREN sold this 200 acres to Isaac YOUNG!
He bought property from John COLLINS March 18, 1787 in 96 District, Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Hugh paid John COLLINS 100 pounds for 205 acres of land located on both sides of the South Tygar River. His son, Hugh, Jr., witnessed the sale.
Hugh Warren, Sr. is included as a South Carolina Patriot in the American Revolution. "He served on horseback from 1 February 1783 to 15 July 1783 under Capt. Major Parson and Col. Roebuck."
The Compendium of American Genealogy says that Hugh came to South Carolina from Virginia. Sometime prior 1800 he moved on to Green County, Kentucky where we think he was living when he died.
Hugh WARREN Sr. and Sarah ? Warren had the following children:
        + 2 i. James2 WARREN was born June 2, 1749.
+ 3 ii. William WARREN was born in October 1761.
+ 4 iii. Hugh WARREN Jr. was born January 5, 1764.

        Second Generation

        2. James2 WARREN (Hugh1) was born in Virginia June 2, 1749. James died August 19, 1850 in Green County, Kentucky, at age 101. Green County Order Book 10, page 401, records that satisfactory proof was made in open court by the oaths of J. B. Skaggs and R. C. Towles that James Warren departed this life on the 19th day of August 1850 and that he was the identical person named in an original certificate bearing date at the War Office of the United States on the 18th day April 1845, numbered 29.907 granting said James Warren a pension of twenty dollars per annum as a soldier of the Revolution.
He married Barbara (Barbary) MILLER about 1773. Barbary was born circa 1760. Barbary died before April 21, 1851 at age 90.
James enlisted in the army about the fifteenth of October 1779 in Greenville Town, Greenville County, South Carolina.
James served with his brothers, Hugh Jr. and William, in the War of the Revolution. After the war was over, he remained in South Carolina until 1790, when he moved to Green County, Kentucky and then on to Indiana. On October 17, 1801 the Liberty Baptist Church was established on Brush Creek, in Green County and James' wife Barbara and his sister-in-law Rhoda Warren were among the Charter Members. James and Barbara moved to Johnson County, Indiana about 1826 and James returned to Green County, Kentucky about 1839.
On December 19, 1834, he was 85 and filed a pension application with the Circuit Court of Johnson County, Indiana. (He was given a pension of $20 a year.) In his pension application he said that he volunteered about October 15, 1779 at Greenville Town, Greenville County, South Carolina. He served under officers Solomon Forester, Captain William Wofford, Major John Ford, Colonel John Thomas and General Green. They marched to the Edisto River and then to Four Hole Rivers. He was discharged about January 15, 1780, but was then drafted and again discharged in April of 1780. In one of his periods of service he was stationed for about three months at Earl's Fort. In another period, he was in service at Augusta, South Carolina and marched from there to Savannah on the River Savannah.
In December 1780, he again volunteered and served under Captain Dennis Trammell and they were in the engagement at Cowpens. He was again discharged about January 10, 1781 and about June 1, 1781, he was drafted into a Company commanded by Captain Dixon Christian. They marched to the Edisto River to join General Green. He recalled that he spent "not less than 11 1/2 months in service".
James WARREN and Barbara (Barbary) MILLER had the following children:
5 i. Mary3 WARREN was born probably in 96 District, Greenville County, South Carolina circa 1780. She married Thomas HEUTHER August 10, 1808 in Green County, Kentucky.
6 ii. Timothy WARREN was born probably in 96 District, Greenville County, South Carolina circa 1782.
7 iii. Eady WARREN was born probably in 96 District, Greenville County, South Carolina about 1785. She married Benjamin HALL September 25, 1802 in Green County, Kentucky. Benjamin was born circa 1785.
8 iv. Samuel WARREN was born probably in 96 District, Greenville County, South Carolina circa 1785.
9 v. James WARREN Jr. was born probably in 96 District, Greenville County, South Carolina circa 1785. He married Theny DOLLARHIDE May 10, 1808 in Green County, Kentucky. Theny was born circa 1790. She is the daughter of Francis DOLLARHIDE and Winnie ? Dollarhide.
+ 10 vi. Absolom WARREN was born about 1795.
11 vii. Tomslin WARREN was born in Green County, Kentucky October 30, 1797. Tomslin died June 14, 1857 in Moniteau County, Missouri, at age 59. She married Perry BAILEY September 17, 1817 in Green County, Kentucky. Perry was born February 11, 1798 in Tennessee.

        3. William2 WARREN (Hugh1) was born in Virginia in October 1761. William died May 10, 1842 in Green County, Kentucky, at age 80. Green County Order Book 9, page 445 records that proof was provided by Nathan Warren & J. D. Salsman that William Warren late of Green County, Kentucky died on May 10, 1842 and that certificate number 31.862 had been issued by the War Office of the United States on July 15, 1841 granting him a pension of $40 per annum.
He married Rhoda FOSTER in the summer of 1774 in Greenville County, South Carolina. In 1836, Rhoda, who was then 85 years old, filed a declaration for a widow's pension. She was quoted as saying, "She was married to said Warren by a Baptist Minister by the name of Welch, by what was called Publication of Banns in the Church. She does not know whether any record was ever preserved of her said marriage. She has made Enquiry & Search for it but has been unable to find it & she supposes that no record was made...or it may have been destroyed from the early period of her said marriage & the loose manner of keeping records & the difficulty of preserving them in the Revolution. She has no record of the date, that is the particular month in which she was married."
Rhoda was born about 1761 in South Carolina and died April 15, 1850 in Green County, Kentucky, at age 88. Green County Order Book 10, page 360 records that satisfactory proof was made by the oaths of Uriah Warren and S. A. Spencer that Rhoda Warren, widow of William WARREN, departed this life on the 15th day of April 1850, that she was the identical person named in an original certificate bearing date at the War Office of The United States on the 19th day of January 1849, numbered 3173, that granted to the said Rhoda Warren a pension of $66.66 per annum.
In 1846 Rhoda stated, in her application for a pension as the widow of a soldier of the American Revolution, that she had 13 children and that the oldest was 69 and the youngest was about 40. She then listed them, by age. Based on her statement, her oldest child, Polly would have been born about 1777 and her youngest, Silas would have been born in 1806 or 1807. I "did attempt to keep a record of the ages of...children but now find that it is either lost or destroyed".

William WARREN bought property from Thomas LOWRY November 9, 1787 in Greenville County, South Carolina. He paid 20 pounds for 150 acres on the waters of the South Tygar River in 96 District, South Carolina. His father, Hugh and his brother, Hugh, Jr. witnessed the transaction.
He was listed as the head of a family in the 1790 Census in Ninety- six District, Greenville County, South Carolina. He moved to Kentucky sometime before 1806 as he purchased land from William BROWNLEE on January 1, 1806 on Brush Creek in Green County.
Revolutionary War, File #3056 "William WARREN, son of Hugh WARREN, was born in October 1761, in Virginia, the county not given, and moved when a small boy to South Carolina; he was the brother of Hugh WARREN.
While a resident of Ninety-Six District, South Carolina, William WARREN volunteered sometime in 1776, and served at various times until 1782, amounting in all to almost two years, as a private soldier under Captains Jeremiah DOTY, Dennis TRAMELL, Jeremiah DICKSON, and COULTER, and Colonels THOMAS and John ROEBUCK in the South Carolina troops; he was on expeditions against the Indians on the Savannah River, and in engagements with the Tories in South Carolina. His first service in 1776, was rendered as a substitute for his father, Hugh WARREN.
He was still living in Ninety-Six District, Greenville County, South Carolina when the 1790 census was taken, but moved about 1796 to Kentucky. William WARREN applied for pension October 20, 1834, at which time he was a resident of Green County, Kentucky. His claim was allowed."

William's wife Rhoda, was one of the charter members of the Liberty Separate Baptist Church. The church "was a small log house with a mud and stick chimney" located "in a fold in the hills of Green County". The leaders

of the founding group were Brother William MATTHEWS and Brother Benjamin LYNN. There were thirty-two charter members, who "left the Brush Creek Church to adopt any rules of Decorum they believed to be proper and in agreement with the Gospel". Other charter members who were or became members of our family include John SKAGGS, Moses ETHERTON, Jesse ELKINS, Jeremiah SKAGGS, Stephen SKAGGS, David ELKIN, Joseph WRIGHT, Elizabeth SKAGGS, Mary SKAGGS, Nancy ELKIN, Rachel ELKIN, Jane SKAGGS, Barbara WARREN, Elizabeth WARREN, Rebeckah BREWER, Sarah WRIGHT and Sarah WARREN. If we had all of the necessary information, it's possible that we might find all thirty-two charter members related to us, in some manner!
The Liberty Separate Baptist Church Minutes offer some interesting insights into the mores of that time. "On the first Sattarday in April 1832 after prayer proced to business first Chose Brother Atherton Moderator 2nd Refences Cold for and none found peace Cold for and not found By the reason of a Charge being laid in the Church against rhody warren Seeing She had been guilty of onreasonable talk and bad conduct her fellow ship was tryed in the Church and She was Excluded from under our Watch Care".
In the 1870s Elizabeth Hilton told Rev. A. J. Whitley that she "was present and was in the constition. The house was a small log one, covered with boards, with mother earth for a floor and was destitute of a door, shutter, window, or fireplace and with round logs for seats. It was a thinly settled neighborhood and consequently the congregations were small. Our preachers preached in their shirtsleeves, with buckskin leggins for pants. They were faithful to attend meetings at our log-house in summer and in the winter at private homes."
William WARREN and Rhoda FOSTER had the following children:
        + 12 i. Polly3 WARREN was born December 4, 1776.
+ 13 ii. William WARREN was born circa 1778.

24 xiii. Silas WARREN was born in Kentucky about 1813. Silas died at age unknown. He married Malinda STILLWELL May 17, 1863 at William Skaggs' in Green County, Kentucky. Malinda was born about 1828 in Kentucky.
He was tried in criminal court for petty larceny May 5, 1852 in Hodgenville, LaRue County, Kentucky. Silas was found guilty and the Sheriff of LaRue County was to render five lashes on his bare back.

        4. Hugh2 WARREN Jr. (Hugh1) was born in Virginia January 5, 1764. Hugh died July 17, 1845 in Green County, Kentucky, at age 81. Green County Order Book 9, page 505 records that Hugh Warren late of Green County, Kentucky departed this life on July 17, 1845 and that he had been receiving a pension (26.934) of $45 per annum for his service during the Revolution.
He married Elizabeth ? Warren. Elizabeth was born about 1771 in North Carolina. Elizabeth died after 1850 at age 79.
Hugh was a defendant in a court case May 17, 1788 in Greenville County, South Carolina. A warrant was issued to apprehend him because Lovisey Johnson, a single woman, said that on February 9, 1788 she was delivered of a female bastard child at the house of Hugh Warren Sr. and that Hugh Warren Jr. got her with said child. Hugh's father and his brother, James made bond of 100L sterling that he would appear in County Court for "geeting" a bastard child on the body of Lowis Johnson. On May 17, 1791 the Sheriff was ordered to seize tenements of Hugh Warren, Jr. to make the sum of 2L 4s 8p sterling.
Hugh was listed as the head of a family on the 1790 Census in Ninety-six District, Greenville County, South Carolina. He sold property to Hugh WARREN December 17, 1811 in Green County, Kentucky. He paid his Uncle Hugh, $100 for 200 acres on Brush Creek.
He sold property to Jacob D. SALSMAN I February 23, 1845 in Brush Creek, Green County, Kentucky.
He made a will June 27, 1845 in Green County, Kentucky. In his will he left 1/3 of his land during her lifetime to his wife, Elizabeth and 2/3 to his son, Nathan. Nathan was to get her 1/3 at his mother's death. Daughter, Polly was to receive the 50 acres on which she already lived and the balance of his property was to be divided between all his children. He must have been in poor health because he directed that "My son, Nathan, is to have full control of the Plantation from this time and he is to maintain my wife and me as he has been doing". Nathan Warren was named as Executor and the will was witnessed his son-in- law, Moses Salsman and by Moses Mears.
Before the Revolutionary War, Hugh lived in South Carolina, where he had received a North Carolina Land Grant of "100 acres on both sides of Buck Creek of Packlet". This grant (File no. 597; Bk. 23, p. 123) was made on January 23, probably about 1771.
Revolutionary War--File #S-31453 "Hugh WARREN was born January 5, 1764 in Virginia and moved, with his parents, when quite young to South Carolina: the names of his parents are not shown. At the time he served in the Revolutionary War, he resided about twelve miles from Wofford's Iron Works within less than a mile of the Pacolet River in Ninety Six District, South Carolina. He volunteered about June 1779, and served at various times until the close of the war, amounting in all to more than two years, as a private under Captains Dennis Trammel, Jeremiah Dickson (Dixon), Anthony Couldter, John Lawson and Parsons and Colonel John Roebuck in the South Carolina troops; during the period of his service he was out against the Indians and Tories, was in several engagements with them, assisted in destroying the Indian Towns, and was in the battle of Cowpens. The soldier resided in South Carolina until about 1800, then moved to Kentucky. Hugh WARREN was allowed pension on his application, executed June 16, 1834, at which time he resided in Green County, Kentucky."
Hugh was a member of the Liberty Separate Baptist Church in Green County, Kentucky and is mentioned several times in the church minutes. In January 1829, "Moses Atherton and Hugh Warran Was appointed to take the petion to Mount Carmel Church". When the church decided to appoint John D. OAKS as Preacher, "Hugh Warren and William Graham to Bare a letter to Brother Oaks".

She married Charles (Charlie) SALSMAN December 5, 1848 in Green County, Kentucky. Charlie's brother, William T. SALSMAN was his bondsman and they were married by Rev. Elijah ETHERTON.
Charlie was born August 2, 1826 in Edmonson County, Kentucky. He was the son of Moses SALSMAN and Elizabeth ? Salsman. Charlie died heart disease July 21, 1891 near Otter, LaRue County, Kentucky, at age 64. His body was interred in Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery, near Buffalo, LaRue County, Kentucky. His funeral service was preached by William WEBSTER and Rev. L. R. DRUIEN at Mt. Tabor Church on Sunday May 10, 1892.
Charlie SALSMAN was a wanderer. He was born in Edmonson County, Kentucky in 1826 and moved to Green County, Kentucky where he married in 1848. In 1857 he moved to Montgomery County, Arkansas. He wrote his cousin Ezekiel SALSMAN and S. T. WILSON on April 10, 1857 that he was on his way to the Kansas Territory when he "changed his notion and concluded to try a warmer climate". That warmer climate was twenty miles from Hot Springs. There he settled on "300 acres of as good land as in Green County Ky... where I expect to settle for life". We don't know how long he stayed there, but on March 1, 1860 he patented 40 acres in the Clarksville, Arkansas Land Office and in the 1860 census, he and his family were living near Clarksville in Johnson County, Arkansas. By 1870, he was back in Green County living on Upper Brush Creek.
In 1880, Charlie applied for a Civil War veteran's pension. In his pension application he stated that his residence at the time of his enlistment was Johnson County Arkansas, P.O. Clarksville and he had lived for a short period in Jefferson County, Indiana where his P.O. address was North Madison. He said that he left Indiana in 1865, came to Hart County, Kentucky and moved to Green County, Kentucky in November 1867. At the time of application he was living in LaRue County, Kentucky with a P.O. address of Mt Sherman.
He didn't always take his family when he wandered. The last time he left home, he rode his mule to Hodgenville, Kentucky to sell his tobacco. He sold the tobacco and his mule, got on the train and left. After some time, he wrote his wife, Sary and said that if she would let him come home, he would be good and not leave any more. He returned and kept his word. (His granddaughters passed this story down but they didn't know how old he was, when he decided to quit wandering.)
On July 31, 1889, Charlie applied for an increase in his $8.00 a month pension. He was 64 years old and his claim was based on new disabilities, including "Partial Deafness, Neuralgia and weakness of left ankle". The examiner found "Severe Deafness of each ear, can hear the tick of a watch when firmly pressed against external Ear". (Loss of hearing must have been genetic, as many of Charlie's descendents have had the same problem.) William Franklin WARREN, a nephew submitted an affidavit with this claim. William said that his father, who was the "Trustee of a common school" had hired Charlie to teach school. William said he had attended that school and the teacher could not hear the students and that his health was such that he could not make regular time at school. J. D. HALL, Lewis C. WARREN and John T. WARREN also supplied supporting affidavits. Both commented that Charlie owned a small farm, had two sons to work for him and that he did not have to work for wages.
Two years later his widow, Sary applied for a widow's pension. She was then a resident of near Buffalo, LaRue County, Kentucky and statements from WILLIAM SPROWLS, REVEREND ELIJAH ETHERTON and JOHN B. DURHAM supported her claim. My records do not indicate whether her request was granted.
