Hugh de Beauchamp came into England with the Conqueror, by whom he had gift of 43 lordships, the greatest part of which were in Bedfordshire. He also appears at the General Survey to be possessed of large estates in Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, as well as Bedford. These estates are documented in the Domesday book of abt. 1090. He was the founder of this illustrious house in England. He had issue: Simon, who died sine prole; Payne, ancestor of the Beauchamps of Bedford; Walter, of whom further; Milo of Eaton, and Adeline, who married Walter Le Espes of York.

The name Beauchamp originated from the castle of Beauchamp in the Contentin part of the Barony of St. Denis le Geste, Normandy. The family was a branch of the Barons of St. Denis.
