She married Thomas Franklin Barneycastle, which is my main line of research. Could you tell me any more about what happened to Isabelle's parents, so that the girls had to be placed in an orphanage? I couldn't find them on the 1880 census so I assume the parents died between 1870-1880. Also a separate question; George L. Foster married Ella Barneycastle Dec 15, 1912. His father was William, mother Martha. Do you know if this William ties into your family? They also lived in Davie County. I'm assuming George was born after 1880. Thanks for any help! Maureen Posted by: Jerry McDaniel (ID *****6772) Date: July 05, 2005 at 19:09:57 In Reply to: Re: Looking for Foster Descendants by Maureen of 385 Hello Maureen, The following is some of the info that William L. Foster and I have shared; I only know the three girls wound up in an orphanage; assumed parents died from disease or privation as this was reconstrucion period in the south; I have info on Foster line regarding the ancestry of the girls; not much info coming this direction; except William L. Foster listed here is one of my distant cousins. Would like marriage date of Isabell from you. Thanks Jerry Notes for Angeline Foster: Angeline Foster was one of the three known daughters of James Foster and Mary Baxley. The Foster family were wagonmakers. In the book, Davie County Marriages 1836-1900, page 63, James Foster, married Mary Boxley 03 July, 1862; J.H. Hanes, JP; D. Hendren, Eph Gaither, Wit. Some people that have looked at various records have listed Baxley; others have listed Boxley as the surname of Mary Baxley. The Davie County Census for 1880 transcribed and compiled by Nancy K. Murphy and Everette G. Saine list five with the Baxley surname. Robeson County census records list a number of people with the Baxley surname. Records indicate that the Baxley family were from Robeson County, NC, and thus possibly Lumbee Indian descent. For info on this tribe, you may go to the website www.lumbeetribe.com. This is only pure speculation at this point; not fact. Only a maternal dna test taken by a daughter or granddaughter of one of the daughters of Angeline Foster McDaniel would suffice to prove or disprove this theory. Enumerated in the 1870 census, James Foster listed age 48, farm laborer; Mary Baxley listed age 33. Both were listed as unable to read or write, as were many in those days. Angeline Foster and twin sister Isabella, listed as age 1; and another sister, Amanda, age 4. They were orphaned at an early age. The census also indicates that Mary Baxley’s parents were born in South Carolina. Other records differ as to the birthplace of Angeline Foster’s grandparents. These three daughters of James Foster and Mary Baxley lived in the Oxford House, an orphanage in Granville, North Carolina from the early 1870’s onward; they were present in this orphanage for the 1880 census; Family History Library Film 1254965; NA Film No. T9-0965, page number 542A; no Foster or Baxley family members took them in. This may be reflective of the hard and brutal times that happened in the reconstruction period that followed the Civil War. The father of Angeline Foster was thought to be a son of William Foster, Jr. and Matilda Minor and a grandson of William Foster, Sr. and Sarah Lay. However, he was enumerated in another household in the 1850 and 1860 Davie County census. Like the McDaniel Family, the Foster Family contributed heavily to the Civil War. Also, like the McDaniels’, they suffered heavily. Most of the vast number of Foster families in Davie County, North Carolina came from Virginia, or, at least, had ancestors who did. Before 1850, the Fosters, many of whom were tradespeople, were among Davie County’s most numerous families. Her tombstone in the Fork Baptist Cemetery near Advance, Davie County, NC states, Angeline Foster McDaniel. On her tombstone is the inscription, “Come ye blessed; gone but not forgotten.” Davie County marriage book, 1836-1900 lists Amanda Foster, age 22, married Henry Jarvis, age 25 on 12 Feb, 1889; J.A.Davis, JP: A.M. Foster, W.B. Angell, E.J. Davis, Wit. Isabelle Foster, twin sister of Angeline Foster McDaniel married Thomas Franklin Barneycastle. This is only pure speculation at this point; not fact. Elphalet Foster, born: abt 1826 in North Carolina; in the 1850 Davie County census, he was enumerated in the same household as James Foster, the father of Angeline Foster. He is believed to have died before the 1880 census; Elphalet Foster married Rebecca Cornatzer; after her death, he married Eleanor McDaniel, also known as Ellen McDaniel, born 1835 in Rowan County, NC; died June, 1916; she is buried at Turrentine Baptist Church Cemetery, Davie County, NC; They were married on 08 August, 1875; marriage was performed by Rev. J.F. Redwine; Mrs. Eliz. Redwine, Mrs. Emela Bailey, Miss Polly McCarter, Wit; this marriage is listed on page 62 of Davie County Marriage Book. Prior to their marriage, Eleanor McDaniel had one child, Delitha Elizabeth McDaniel, born 1856. The first wife of Elphalet Foster was Rebecca Cornatzer daughter of Jacob Cornatzer (1770-1849) and Mary “Polly” Drake Howard (1785-1860); Elphalet Foster and Rebecca Cornatzer had at least four known children; Sharp Foster; Martha (Betty) Foster who married Henry T. She was born in Halifax County, Virginia, daughter of Joseph Pulliam and Sarah Brandon. The children of John Foster and Agness Allen Pulliam are: *John Foster, born: ?? in Caswell County, North Carolina; died: before 1850; married Elizabeth Perkins, born: abt 1799; died: unknown; they were married in Caswell County, North Carolina 29 July, 1816.
