Narrative

GILBERT DE SEGRAVE, son of Hereward of Segrave (now Seagrave), co. Leicester, in 1166 held ¼ fee of William, Earl of Warwick. In 1187-88, with Robert, Canon of St. Mary, Leicester, he accounted for the revenues of the Abbey. He witnessed charters (n.d.) of Roger de Canville to Leicester Abbey and of Bertram de Verdun, and in 1190 a mortgage executed by William de Tureville. In 1192 and 1193 he accounted for the farm of cos. Warwick and Leicester (with Rainald Basset) on behalf of Hugh, Bishop of Coventry, in 1194 for the farm of co. Warwick for ½ year, and in 1195 and 1197 on behalf of William de Aubigny for the farm of cos. Warwick and Leicester, in each case for ½ year. In 1196 he was a Justice in eyre for co. Lincoln with Henry de Whiston; in 1197 he held land in the town of Leicester of Alice de Duston; in 1197/8 he was a pledge for William de Gernemue for his fine made with the King; in 1198-99 he owed 400 marks for an aid for the King's war. His wife is unknown. He died presumably before Michaelmas 1201. [Complete Peerage XI:596-7]

In the 12th year of Henry II [1166], Gilbert de Segrave, Lord of Segrave, co. Leicester (whence he assumed his surname), held the fourth part of one knight's fee of William de Newburgh, Earl of Warwick, and in the 4th Richard I [1193], he was joint sheriff with Reginald Basset, for the cos. Warwick and Leicester under Hugh de Novant, bishop of Coventry, in which office he continued two whole years. He subsequently, 10th Richard I [1199], gave 400 marks to the king towards the support of his wars. This Gilbert was s. by his son, Stephen.         d. before Nov. 1201

        The Red Book of the Exchequer for 1166 records that Gilbert held four parts of one knight's fee from William, Earl of Warwick in Warwickshire.(1) He also witnessed a charter from the reign of King Henry II.(2) In 4 Richard I, he was joint sheriff for Warwickshire and Leicestershire with Reginald Bassett under Hugh de Novant, Bishop of Coventry. In 1199 he gave 400 marks to the king for support of the wars.(3)
