Narrative
Merida and John Hardy Taylor were coal miners. They were once trapped in a cave-in for a week. By the time they were rescued the group had eaten all the mules and had begun eating their own shoe leather.

"Merida R. Browning, 84, Retired Miner, Dies After Lenghty Illness
"Merida R Browning, 84, of 21 South Wells, died at 1 A.M. today at Marshall Browning Hospital after an illness of 10 years.
"Browning, a retired miner, was born November 14, 1877, in Plumfield, a son of Lumm and Alice (Brown) Browning, both deceased. He was a resident of Du Quoin during his adult life. He was married on December 06, 1904 in Du Quoin to Bessie Pierce, who survives.
"He was a member of the First Methodist Church.
"He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Paul (Ruby) Schlueter, Oak Lawn, a son Carroll Browning, Chicago, and seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
"A son, Cecil, is deceased, as are a sister and two brothers.
"Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday, January 20, at Schroeder Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Sims officiating.
"Burial will be in Old Du Quoin cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 P.M. Friday."
