Civil War Confederate Soldier. James Gideon Norman gave the Confederacy four complete years of service as a Private in Company B, 7th Virginia Infantry. He enlisted on April 20, 1861 in Rappahannock County, Virginia and was led into battle at First Manassas, Virginia by then Colonel James Lawson Kemper. He survived the clash with a wound to his neck. He would receive a second battle wound to his left foot during the June 30, 1862 Battle of Frazier's Farm, Virginia. He recuperated enough to fight with the regiment at the grand Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia. It was during this winter battle that he received a dangerous wound in the face on December 13, 1862. With the war all but concluded, he was hospitalized with an unrecorded complaint in Petersburg, Virginia on May 15, 1865. Despite his scars of war, the devoted Confederate soldier lived to be 89 years old. He passed away in Rixeyville, Virginia.
