Narrative
Other researchers show daughter of Alexander Doniphant and Amy Unknown, shown to be Partridge, as Amy Doniphant who married Mr. Kelly. But since Amy isn't mentioned in the abstract of his will, you chose Anne who is mentioned but she is the one who probably married Mr. Giles and may be the daughter of his last wife Susannah Unknown. This stuff can be sooooo confusing.
Captain Alexander Doniphan, born about 1653, died 1717, appears prominently on the records of Westmoreland and Richmond Counties, Virginia and also on the Maryland records. He was a merchant and considerable landholder. There is a power of attorney dated 29 July 1671 from Thomas Yeabsley of Plymount, County of Devon, merchant, to Alexander Doniphan of Plymouth aforesaid, merchant, to collect certain debts due said Yeabsley by Robert Slye of Maryland (Maryland Archives, Vol. LX, pgs. 491-492). He also appears as "Alexander Doniphan, merchant in Virginia" in the Westmoreland County, Virginia, records 1671-1675 and they too indicate that Captain Doniphan was a merchant in Plymouth, Devonshire, England, before he established himself in Virginia when he was about 18 years of age; married first before 1677, Amy Unknown, by whom he seems to have had issue one son Alexander Doniphan, Jr.; married secondly before 1692, Margaret Mott, second daughter of George Mott, Gentleman of Rappahannock County, a wealthy land owner, by whom he had several children. He seems to have experienced matrimonial dissatisfaction with his third wife Susanna per the terms of his will. He was captain of a troop of horse in Richmond County in 1705; will was written 20 September 1716, proved Richmond County court on 6 February 1716/17

The earliest record yet found of the Alexander Doniphan is the one relating that he made a "deposit in Westmoreland County, Virginia, in 1674 where he gives his age as twenty-four. He witnessed wills in 1693-1684-1686 in Rappahannock County. The name of this county was changed in 1692 to Richmond County. A record of this will be found in Spottsylvania County. Alexander Doniphan evidently became a man of prominence as he was a captain in the Revolutionary War at the time he became Justice of Richmond County in 1692-1704. (Refer to William and Mary Quarterly, Vol III. page 132 Volume XVII, page 72 XV page 187.) He was sworn in as Justice of Richmond County on June 1st 1692 (Order Book No 1). In 1704 He commanded a horse against the Indians in the upper part of Richmond County for which service he received pay. This act makes him a "Colonial Dame" ancestor (Magazine of History Vol I page 316. At the time of his death 1716 he was sheriff of RichmondHe was married twice: first to Margaret Mott, mother of his children and daughter of George Mott. After her death he married Susannah, whose maiden name is not known, but whom he mentions in his will which was dated Sept 20, 1716, probably Feb 6, 1717 in Richmond County. He and Susannah evidently kept their properties separate. In this will he names beside Susannah his wife siex children: Alexander, Mott, Robert, Margaret, Elizabeth and Ann and a grand son Giles Travers. His son was Robert was named executor of his will. The eldest son Alexander, married Catherine Dobbins?. The second son, Mott married Matilda Ann Anderson. It is through them the descendants down to Colonel Alexander William Doniphan, the hero of the Mexican War and the great lawyer and statesman of Missouri.
It is not definitely known whether the Doniphans and Motts met for the first time in the old country or in Virginia, only the Motts came to Virginia before Sir Alexander Doniphan came. Margaret Mott, who married Sir Alexander Doniphan has ever been referred to by family traditions as a "Scott" from the vast acreage owned by the Mott brothers George and John in Virginia. We have heard that Margaret Mott owned land in Virginia stretching seven miles in length, in Rappahannock County, but we have no record of her having received an inheritance in Scotland.
John and George Mott, brothers, patented, Oct 17, 1670 15,600 acres of land in Rappahannock County, the present King George County. By their respective wills, dated October 18, 1675 and March 31st 1675, and proved in Rappahannock County was left to the daughters of George Mott. one of these was Margaret, wife of Sir Alexander Doniphan. These facts are stated in a deed dated Mary 3rd, 1725 and recorded King George County from Robert Mott to William Thornton.
It was customary at that early time for an eldest son to make the family estate. George Mott having no sons, his estate was divided among the daughters of whom there were four who Elizabeth who married John Fossaker, Margaret who married Alexander Doniphan, Ann who married John Glendenning and Eleanor who married a Mr Pigg

DONIPHAN FAMILY
OF NORTHERN VIRGINIADONIPHAN FAMILY OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA
The Doniphan Family information needs a lot of work. I look forward to receiving your comments, corrections and updates to the Doniphan family. Jim Burgess
Much of this information is taken from original records and a book entitled The Sydney-Smith and Clagett Price Genealogy written by Lucy Montgomer Smith Price back in 1927 printed by Shenandoah Publishing House Strasburg, Virginia 1927.
Several researchers in Fauquier County, Virginia believe that this book sometimes exaggerats the truth. For the purposes I the DONIPHAN family the serious researcher should decide for himself. I am putting these families together as best I can with the information that I have available. I am ALWAYS interesting in what other information or opinions that others may have. Jim Burgess
Thanks to the return of the King George County, Virginia Will Book A1 and Sam and Ruth Sparacio records I believe that our information is accurate for the most part. If you disagree PLEASE let me know.

Tyler's Quarterly Magazine Volume 26 1944-1945 page 280.
(1) Alexander Doniphan was born previous to 1716, his grand father Captain Alexander Doniphan so indicating in his will. Captain Doniphan bequeathed two tract of land to his son Mott and othis second son that shall be borne the reversionary interest in the said land, thus indicating Mott already had one son but it was not the grand fathers intention that he shoud inherit any of the land which he bequeather his fahter. The only reason the compiler can ascribe to this action is that Captain Doniphan knew his son Mott had married an heiress and that the eldes son of this couple would inherit a goodly land estate from his mother and it was his desire to provide for the second son of Mott althought he had not yet been born. Perhaps Captain Alexander Doniphan used this same reasoning when he failed to bequeath his son Robert any land, being aware he wsa the eldest son and heir of Margaret Mott Doniphan he was already entitled to a vast acreage; he therefore left the land in which he had a fee simple estate to his other children.
Alexander Doniphan was raised in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, where he married 17 Jun 1740 Mary Waugh daughter of Joseph Waugh and Mary (Crosby) Waugh. From her father she inherited 1176 acres on Potomac Creek, while her husband was possed of a considerable landed estate by inheritance and purchase in the counties of Stafford and King George.

Space will not permit further reference to documents relating to Alexander
Doniphan. He died in Stafford County in 1768 his will being recorded now in the now missing Will Book N page 37. III. Mott Doniphan was the second son of Captain Alexander and Margaret
(Mott) Doniphan. Stafford County C.Order Book #1 page 55. By inheritance he was entitled to a vast acreage in King George and Stafford counties and by virture of his marriage with Rosannah, daughter of Captain George and Mary Mathews Anderson of Potomac Creek, Stafford, he had a courtesy right in considerable other land on Potomac Creek, Overwharton Parish. While documentary evidence is lacking, the indication are that Mott Doniphan and Rosannah Anderson were married circa 1710.On 1 May 1747 Mott Doniphan(Stafford County Book P page 142 and Z page 201). purchased from Thomas Stubblefield and Ellen, his wife lage widow of Robert Doniphan Junior deceased all her dower right in her said deceased husbands deceased estate. (King George County D B #3 page 180. On 5 Jun 1747 Mott doniphan of Overwharton Parish, Stafford Count, "for love and affection he bears to his son Anderson Doniphan(Stafford Record Book Z page 392). he deeds him one half of the plantation whereon my brother Robert Doniphan lated lived and which descended to me by the death of my nephew Robert Doniphan lying and being in Brunswick Parish, King George County. King George County Deed Book #3 page 182. Mott Doniphans appears frequently on the King George and Stafford county records but space will not permit further abstracts from those records.
The name of Mott Doniphan appears upon a panel on the galler of Aquia Church, Overwharton Parish, in a list of vestrymen for the year 1757 being the year the present church was constructed.
Rosannah (Anderson) Doniphan predeceased her husband. The will of Mott Doniphan was of record in Stafford county Will Book N 1767-1783 page 333, now missing, however, the chancery suit Doniphan vx Doniphan states Mott died in "anteriour to 7 Oct 1776", and from his position of the will in Book "N" the writer believes this approximately the date of his death. No copy or abstract of the will of Mott Doniphan has been located, however there is ample evidence that he had two sons both of whom predeceased him and Overwharton Parish Register records the marriages of two Misses Doniphans who are logically his daughter there being no other mail of this name eligible to be their father.

(1) Alexander Doniphan was born previous to 1716, his grand father Captain Alexander Doniphan so indicating in his will. Captain Doniphan bequeathed two tract of land to his son Mott and his second son that shall be borne the reversionary interest in the said land, thus indicating Mott already had one son but it was not the grand fathers intention that he should inherit any of the land which he bequeather his father. The only reason the compiler can ascribe to this action is that Captain Doniphan knew his son Mott had married an heiress and that the eldest son of this couple would inherit a goodly land estate from his mother and it was his desire to provide for the second son of Mott although he had not yet been born. Perhaps Captain Alexander Doniphan used this same reasoning when he failed to bequeath his son Robert any land, being aware he was the eldest son and heir of Margaret Mott Doniphan he was already entitled to a vast acreage; he therefore left the land in which he had a fee simple estate to his other children.
Alexander Doniphan was raised in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, where he married 17 Jun 1740 Mary Waugh daughter of Joseph Waugh and Mary (Crosby) Waugh. From her father she inherited 1176 acres on Potomac Creek, while her husband was possessed of a considerable landed estate by inheritance and purchase in the counties of Stafford and King George.

GENERAL ALEXANDER WILLIAM DONIPHAN
Alexander William DONIPHAN was born in Mason County, Ky., July 9, 1808, the youngest in a family of ten children. His ancestors on both the paternal and maternal sides were of English extraction. His father, Joseph DONIPHAN, was a native of King George
County, Va., and removed to Kentucky with his family in 1790. His mother, whose maiden name was Ann Smith, was a native of Fauquier County Virginia and was a native of Fauquier County, Va., and was an Aunt of Gov William SMITH, of that state. Joseph Doniphan served in the American army during the entire Revolutionary struggle, and at its conclusion, being yet unmarried, he spent several years with Daniel Boone in Kentucky, and is said to have taught the first school ever opened in that state. Our subject was left an orphan by the death of his father in 1813, and his after nuture devolved upon his mother, who was a woman of extraordinary mental powers and sparkling wit. When he was in his eighth year she placed him under the instructions of Richard Keene, of Augusta, Ky., a learned through eccentric Irishman and a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin. At the age of fourteen young Doniphan was entered as a student of Augusts College, where he was graduated at the early age of eighteen with especial distinction in classics. While in that institution he had the benefit of the training of several able instructors particularly Drs. Bascom and Durbin.
Upon leaving college, Mr Doniphan devoted himself for nearly a year to the systematic study of history and general literature. He then began the study OF LAW IN THE OFFICE OF Hon. Martin P. Marshal, of Kentucky, one of the most eminent jurist of the Marshall family, and after spending two years with that gentleman, he was licensed to practice by the Supreme Court of Ohio. In Mar he came to Missouri and was licensed to practice by the Supreme Court at Fayette in the succeeding month. On the 19th of April 1830, he settled in Lexington, Mo., and commenced his long, successful and brilliant forensic career.
………
In 1833 Mr Doniphan moved to Liberty, Missouri which he made his home for the succeeding thirty years………
In 1836 Mr Doniphan was elected to represent Clay County in the Legislature; again in 1840 and yet again in 1854, without opposition…..
In 1846, occurred the War with Mexico. In May, of that year, Gov Edwards requested Mr Doniphan to assist in raising troops for volunteer service in the Western counties of the state, and he acceded to the request. The enthusiasm of the people was high, and in a week or so the companies of men which upon organization at Fort Leavenworth formed the famous First Regiment Missouri Cavalry had volunteered……….
In Jun of 1846, the regiment began its long march to Santa Fe, Chihuahua, Monterey and the Gulf, a distance of thirty six hundred miles. The march is known in history as Doniphan’***pedition………..
On December 1837, Col Doniphan was married to Miss Elizabeth Jane, daughter of late John THORNTON of Clay County, Missouri. She was a woman of much strength of character, of refined and gentle manner and elegant literary tastes. She was acute in her perceptions and highly religious in feelings. The domestic life of herself and husband was characterized by the utmost harmony. Two children, both sons, were born to them, but they died in youth. In 1863, and then returned to Western Missouri. He lost his estimable wife in 1873, after which time he lived in retirement, devoting himself entirely to the amusements of reading, correspondence and converse with his friends.
…………
He died in Richmond, Mo., August 8, 1887, and was buried in the new cemetery at Liberty, Mo., on the 12th of the same month. A lofty monument marks his resting-place.ANDERSON DONIPHAN & SUSAN SMITH

Before 1686/7 Edward MOUNTJOY married Elizabeth widow of Major Andrew Monroe of Monroe Creek County. He married secondly c1710 Mary CROSBY (16??-1756), daughter of George CROSBY of Stafford. Edward and Mary had one son, Captain William MOUNTJOY (1711-1777), WHO RESIED AT Locust Hill and became very involved in the affairs of Stafford County.
Edward’s will dated September 6, 1712, ordered that a certain tract of land on Potomac Creek be sold and appointed Mary hi***ecutrix. That land, 246 acres of the original 940 acres grant was sold in June 1723 to John Lomax of Es*** County for L40, the money being used to pay Edward’s debts. Left with Edward’s infant son, Mary married secondly Peter Mauzy, by whom she had issue. Like Edward, Peter died soon after his marriage, leaving Mary with several small children. Mary married thirdly c1720 the Reverend Joseph Waugh (d.1727) of Belle Plain. His first wife had been Rachel Gowry, daughter of John Gowry.
Captain William Mountjoy resided at Locust Hill and was a considerable land hold in Stafford and adjoining counties. He married Phillis Reilly (1717-1771), daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Reilly of St. Paul’s Parish. They had nine children who lived long enough to be included in their father’s will. To son William (1737-1820) he left his dwelling plantation (Locust Hill), To son John 1741-1825, he left 10 acres including the mill (Millvale). To son Alvin (1745-1827) he left 150 acres. Son Thomas (b.1740) received 200 acres. The other children received land in Stafford and Fauquier Counties.
Several of the Captain’s children appear in Stafford County records, including Thomas (b.1740) who acted as Presiding Justice in Stafford. He was still living in 1806, when a deposition given by him listed his age at sixty six. Please refer to pages 218-223 for much more information on the Mountjoy family.

The first is part of a 246+ acres granted to Edward Mountjoy 11 Aug 1704 and by his widow who married Joseph Waugh sold jointly to Colonel Lomax who sold in 1736 to Bristol Iron Mine Company and Colonel John Champe by a power from said company sold to Doniphan. Thomas Brooks, Allen, Mountjoy, Carter, Withers. Surveyed by Jno. Mauzy.
In November 1838, Doniphan refused to carry out an illegal order to shoot Mormon leader Joseph Smith Jr. and others on the Public Square of Far West, Missouri. This marker commemorates Doniphan's home site during that period, while he served as a lawyer to Mormon leaders. His home was located on the south side of the small park (next to the alley) across the street from the First Presbyterian Church. The First Pesbyterian Church of Liberty owns the park where this new marker stands. In relation to another familar landmark- it is on the east side of the street, one half block southeast of the Liberty Jail Visitors' Center.
Students and scholars of Mormon History are excited about this new Doniphan marker. MMFF Secretary Bill Curtis coordinated arrangements with First Liberty Presbyterian Church, Liberty, Missouri, making this commemoration possible. The featured speaker was Juarenne Hester of Liberty, Missouri, who is a champion of Alexander Doniphan and first suggested such a commemoration to Bill Curtis. A matching marker was erected last year by the First Presbyterian Church directly across the street commemorating the Doniphan Hubbell House, Doniphan's Mexican War era home.
The marker text reads: Alexander W. Doniphan 1808-1887
Lawyer, Statesman and Military Leader
While living on this site in the 1830's, Alexander Doniphan championed the Constitituional rights of an oppressed people to ensure their religious freedom. He helped create Caldwell County as a refuge for the Mormons in 1836 and refused to carry out an illegal order by his superior officer to execute Joseph Smith and other Mormon leaders in 1838. Doniphan became highly respected for his leadership and integrity.
