Description from Military Records - Height, 5' 4". Brown Hair, Blue eyes.

Enlisted as a private in Company E of the 2nd Alabama Infantry Regiment on April 1, 1861 at Fort Morgan Alabama for one year.
Re-enlisted on March 20th, 1862 into Company D of the 1st Confederate Infantry Battalion at Fort Pillow TN. As a Member of the 1st Confederate Infantry Battalion and confirmed by muster rolls and pension applications, James saw action at the Battle of Vicksburg where he was Captured on or about July 4th, 1863 an was subsequently parolled. He rejoined his Company (Battalion) and in April 1863 it was sent to Bragg's army and brigaded under first Reynolds, then Adams. Ordered to Virginia in March 1864, the battalion was placed in Davis' Brigade, Heth's Division, where it remained to war's end. It was engaged at The Wilderness, 2nd Cold Harbor, and at Petersburg where it lost severely at the attempt to drive the enemy from the Weldon Railroad. At Hatcher's Run (2 April 1865), the battalion was captured, with the entire brigade (although greatly reduced in numbers). James was caputured on April 2, transported to the Point Look Out MD pow camp. He was paroled on June 19, 1865.

Location Today Unknown. In 1868 this grave was located on the JKP Murphy place near Murfreesboro. This was a grave of a Georgia soldier. Mr. Murphy advertised in the local paper about the grave, as he wanted to move the body and hoped someone would claim it. Grave marked: F.A.H. - Company G 37th Georgia.

Sept 21,1840 Polk was born James Knox Polk Murphy in Rutherford County TN.
1850 appears in the 1850 Census taken at Fosterville at the age of 10. The census indicates that he attended school that year.
1860 does not appear in the 1860 Census, either as part of his family or as head of household.
April 1, 1861 enlists in the the Alabama 2nd Infantry Co. E at Fort Morgan Alabama on April 1, 1861 for 1 year.
March 20, 1861 re-enlists in the 1st Confederate Infantry Battalion Co. D at Fort Pillow TN for the duration of the war.
Junexx to July xx engaged at the battle of Vicksburg Mississipi.
