This is an abstract of Joseph Howard's will as found in the Maryland
Calendar of Wills:

zard," 100 A. of "Howard's Package." 310 A. of "Second Discovery;" and per
sonalty.
To son Ephraim and hrs., 500 A. of "Discovery," and personalty.
To son Joseph and hrs., 200 A. out of "Discovery," being pt. of tract whi
ch Phillip Hammond claims as his; dwelling plantation "Howard's Inheritanc
e," S. side South R; 30 A. "Sarah's Inheritance;" and
personalty.
To son Cornelius and hrs., residue of "Discovery," 400 A. of "Howard's Pac
kage"; and personalty.
To grandson Joseph Hichings and hrs., 100 A. of "Second Discovery."
To wife Margery, daus. Sarah, Ruth Duvoll and Hannah Jacob, personalty.

# Note:Known as Capt. Cornelius Howard of Howard's Heirship and Chance and was t
he fifth son of Matthew and Ann Howard, who moved from Lower Norfolk, Virg
inia, together with his relative Edward Lloyd, in about 1650, to the sou
th side of the Severn settlements. Cornelius became the most prominent mem
ber of the family in early Maryland affairs. He was born about 1630, in Vi
rginia and he died in Maryland in 1680. He married Elizabeth, a daught
er or grand daughter of Lawrence Todd.
He came to the Severn River from Norfolk, Virginia. with the Puritan exod
us of 1650-1658. He was commissioned Ensign under Capt. Benson. He serv
ed in the House of Burgess from 1671 to 1676, and was Justice of the Pea
ce in 1679. Captain Howard's social position enabled him to increase his s
urveys. In Cornelius' will, made in 1680, he bequeaths "To wife Eliza, exe
cutrix., home plantation during life". His children and their inheritan
ce are noted as follows, To son Joseph at 18 yrs. of age, "Howard's Hop
e" on s. side Severn R., and "Howard's Hardship." To son Cornelius at 18 y
rs. of age, "Howard's Hills and tract on Hockly Creek." To dau. Sarah, 2
50 A. at Tuckahoe on Choptanke River. To dau. Mary, 200 A., part of "Howa
rd and Porter's Range." To dau. Eliza:, personalty. His will is witness
ed by Phillip Calvert and John Howard. Cornelius Howard's will was probat
