        A. Floyd Hicks Jr., 87, of Timberlake, passed away on July 27, 2013. Floyd was born October 12, 1925, the son of Albert Floyd Hicks Sr. and Minnie Belle Averette Hicks.

        He grew up on a farm in Person County, always recounting the hard work, risks, and family tales. One of his proudest stories was about serving for his country. He was a member of the Army Air Corps, 4th Squadron during World War II, serving as a cartographer, mapping war zones over the world. He was an honored veteran all his life, often lamenting the treatment of vets. Upon leaving service, he studied Agriculture at, then, State College.

        After graduating with a BS in 1949, he married Aleine Jones Hicks that same year. They began a life in Timberlake, serving in many capacities and making dear friends along the way. In 1972, he received a Masters of Science from NC State University in Horticulture, driving weekly to Raleigh for many months. Mr. Hicks was a highly respected teacher of Vocational Agriculture and Horticulture for many years at Helena High School and then at Person High. He then joined the Board of Education as county vocational education director. Many trees around the Person County schools are growing because of him.

        After retirement, Mr. Hicks set on a real journey of lifelong education. He was a man of much knowledge and skill, always rigging and building and tearing down things to improve his community. He was a lifelong member of Helena UMC, where he served on many committees and as a valued Sunday School Teacher. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be much remembered for his service to his family, his church, his community, and his country.

        He is survived by a daughter, Marie Hicks Pulliam and husband, Albert (Beater) Pulliam of Cary, NC; a son, Ray Floyd Hicks and wife, Ginny Rogers Hicks, of Apex, NC; grandsons, Matt Pulliam and wife, Jessica, of Wendell, NC and Michael Hicks of Raleigh, NC; granddaughter, Austin Hicks Pulliam of Cary, NC; great grandson, Zan Pulliam; one brother, Wilton (Toot) Hicks of Roxboro and many loving nieces and nephews of the Hicks-Jones Family.

        He was preceded in death by wife, Aleine Hicks; brothers, Ronald, Archie, Harold Hicks; and sister, Ann Whitfield.

        The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 29 at Brooks and White Funeral Home, Roxboro, NC. A service of remembrance will be Tuesday, July 30 at 11 at Helena UMC in Timberlake, NC. Graveside rites at Person Memorial Cemetery following the service.
