To my son JOHN WATTS 150 acres of land on Beaverdam Creek where John Holliday now lives, one negro called Rose, one feather bed and mare already delivered and five shillings sterling.
To my son BENJAMIN WATTS 225 acres of land on the lower part of where I now live and half the mill.
To my son WILLIAM WATTS the manor plantation Whereon I now live containing 225 acres of land and half the mill after my wife Elizabeth Watts decease or widdowhood.
To my daughter ANN SCOTT one negro girl called Bett, one mare and one feather bed already delivered and five shillings sterling.
To my daughter ELIZABETH SNELL one negro girl called Candass, one gray mare called Fly, already delivered, and five shillings sterling.
To my daughter MILLY RICHARDS one negro girl called Tamer, and a cow and calf already delivered and five shillings sterling.
To my daughter MARY SINCLAIR one negro girl called Hannah during her natural life and one bed already delivered and five shillings sterling. I also bequeath Hannah's oldest boy to the said Mary Sinclair's eldest son Edward Sinclair, and Hannah's second son to William Sinclair, son of the said Mary Sinclair. Hannah is to be returned to my son Benjamin Watts after said Mary Sinclair's decease.
To my daughter SARAH HUDDLESTON one negro girl called Zena after my wife Elizabeth Watts' decease.
To my daughter BETSEY WATTS one negro girl called Oma at my said Wife's decease, also one mare and feather bed.
To my son Benjamin Watts three negroes, Melzor, Aggy and Pendor, after my said wife's decease or widowhood.
To my son William Watts two negroes Charles and Eben. Also one roan horse and one bed.
My desire is that my estate should not be appraised. Executors: my two sons Benjamin Watts and William Watts
Witnesses: Joseph Brown, Charles Simmons and Isaac Sinclair.

Capt. Henry Downs, Sr. and wife, Lady Jane Douglas settled first in Prince George co., Maryland, but lived for a time in Penna. before moving to Orange Co., Va., the part which became Augusta co., where they distinguished themselves in the history of this vicinity.

Authorities differ in the date of the Downs families’ removal from Augusta Co., Va. to Mechlenburg (then Anson) Co., NC. It is assumed that Henry Sr. came to NC in 1757, the last date of his numerous land sales.

Records of old Anson Co., NC: “Henry Downs, Sr., of Anson Co., NC, and Henry Downs, Jr. of August Co., Va., 14 Feb. 1757, Indenture 244 a. in Orange Co., Va.” “Henry Downs, Jr., lately of Orange Co., Va., 25 Aug. 1759, 244 a. patented to Henry Downs, Sr. 30 July 1742….Indenture.”

1. Henry Downs, Jr. (see later) (1728-1798) b. Penna, d. Providence, Mechlenburg co., NC, m. 1750, Orange Co., Va., Frances Chew (1730-1784) dau. of Col. Thomas Chew and wife, Martha Taylor.
2. William Downs, b. 1734 (?) d. 1803, Clarksville, Tenn., on his bounty land grant, m. Phoebe Hague (or Hayne). Served in Cont. Army, Adjt. 2nd SC, Reg. B. Reared their family in Wilkes Co., Ga.
3. Richard Downs, never married.
4. Joshua Downs, never married. Went West with a trading expedition and was killed by Indians in Cherokee Nation.
5. Jonathan Downs (see later) b. 1738, d. in Laurens Dist., SC, 10/18/1818; m. July 6, 1772, Sarah (Sallie) Gary (1756-1844). Promoted to Major in the Rev.; was severely wounded in the Ring Fight with Indians. A member of the Legislature when Laurens Dist. was organized, he named the Dist. for his dear friend, Henry Laurens, modestly declining the offer to name it for himself.
6. Elizabeth Downs m. in August Co., Va., Edward Watts (Whats) of Culpeper Co., Va. listed as “present wife of Edward Watts 9/25/1742.” He deeded land in Culpeper Co., Va. May 17, 1752.
7. Joseph Downs (see later) (4/23/1752-8/25/1819) m. May 1, 1796, Jane Alexander, dau. of Abraham Alexander, Mechlenburg Co., NC. In 1783, he moved to Laurens Dist. SC and assisted in organizing the District. He d. there and was buried near his former home on Raborn (Rabon) Creek.
8. George Downs m. Frances Anderson and reared their family in Ga. His name in certified list of Ga. Troops, 6th Company.
9. Eleanor Downs, m. in August co., Va., Mr. Crittenden. No further account.
10. Major Ambrose Downs, b. 1761, Richmond co., Ga. m. Ezebel Perkins, Pendleton Dist., SC. Prob. m. twice: In records of Wiles Co., Ga., 1784, Ambrose Downs, planter, wife, Sabert ____. Surgeon in 6th Ga. Troops, certified list, promoted to Major. Awarded a land grant in Miss. and located there. “ -
