He was a son of Herbaren II van der Lede , founder of the lordship of Arkel.Jan is first mentioned in a Latin chronicle from 1253, in which he is listed as Johannes miles dominus de Arkele (Jan, knight, Lord of Arkel). After that he is mentioned several times in deeds about loans. In 1253 he appears together with his brother Herbaren in a deed as a witness for Jan I van der Lede . On June 25, 1254, Jan is a witness to a covenant of Jan van der Lede and Hugo van Arkel to forgive Floris van Dalem the property of Dalem as fiefdom. [1] He took part in the wars with the rebellious West Frisians, led by his feudal lord William II of Holland . Around 1260 receives the fief van den Berghe (contemporaryBergambacht ) from the County of Holland , which he gives on loan to his brother Herbaren. On October 29, 1263, Jan fetches Otto with Slingelandt. On August 23, 1264, together with Willem van Brederode, he grants Hendrik van Alblas the right to dig a moat or canal (Jan is then mentioned for the last time in a document). [2]
Jan I was nicknamed De Sterke , he is said to have once jokingly pulled himself up at the gate of Gorinchem with his horse. In 1267 he started building the castle of Gorinchem.
