Virtual On, the full name of which is actually Cybertroopers Virtual-On is an arcade game released by Sega in 1996 and ported to the Sega Saturn the same year. It was also released for the PC the following year.

Virtual On is essentially a 3D fighting game. Part of what makes the game somewhat unique is the sci-fi setting and the use of firearms and explosives in addition to melee weapons. Each player controls a mecha called a Virtuaroid. Each Virtuaroid typically has three weapons. A firearm of some sort in the right hand, an explosive of some sort in the left, and a typically powerful center weapon that can only be used a few times in a row before running out of energy. The Virtuaroids are controlled with twin sticks and left and right fire buttons. Two player versions were also released for the Saturn that supported the NetLink and XBAND for online 2-player gaming. It was one of only a few games that did so.

Though not your typical fighting game, Virtual On got mostly good reviews in both its arcade and Saturn forms. It also spawned a successful series of games. A remake of the original was released for the PlayStation 2 in 2007. It featured improved graphics and framerates as well as some new features. The original game was also released on the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. It is worth checking out in one for or another if you are a fan of fighting games or mecha games.
