Eternal Champions is a 2D fighting game that was released in 1993 by Sega for the Sega Genesis. This game followed the immensely popular Street Fighter II which came out in 1991 and Mortal Kombat which came out in 1992. It was unique in that unlike those other games, Eternal Champions was a console only release for the Genesis. There was no arcade version.

Eternal Champions plays much like Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat though it did have a number of unique features including projectiles that could be reflected, force fields and weapons. Reviews seem to be very polarized with this game. People either loved it or hated it. Personally, I highly recommend it if you are a fan of the genre. While Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II will always be the most loved 2D fighters, Eternal Champions, though a short lived series, is a close third on the Genesis.

Eternal Champions seems to have dropped rapidly out of favor at Sega. There was a sequel for the Sega CD titled Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side released two years later but after that, there hasn’t been much. A third game was planned for the Saturn but was dropped because it was feared that it would detract from Virtua Fighter sales. Despite its relative popularity, it has frequently been passed over for inclusion on various Sega compilations. It was finally added to the Wii’s Virtual Console in 2007 and released via Steam in 2010. While there was never a third game in the series, there were a couple of spin-off games. Chicago Syndicate was an action game released in 1995 for the Game Gear and X-Perts is a side-scrolling beat’em up released in 1996 for the Genesis. Both feature characters from Eternal Champions.
