Computer + Video Games (August 1991)

Source: Computer + Video Games – Issue Number 117 – August 1991

Computer + Video Games (or Computer & Video Games or Computer and Video Games depending on the time period) was a very long running gaming magazine published in the U.K. It covered all of the popular computers and gaming systems of the time. I suspect this would have been one of my favorite magazines had I lived there. The August 1991 issue includes:

This Month’s Reviews

  • Amiga
    • Deuteros – A plent management simulation from Activision in which you must colonize and re-build a devastated planet.
    • Prehistorik – A platform game from titus featuring a caveman.
    • Sharkey’s Moll – An Operation Wolf clone from Zeppelin.
    • Led Storm – An overhead futuristic racer from Capcom.
    • Bionic Commando – It gets a bad review here but this platform game featuring a guy with a bionic arm was awesome on the NES.
    • R-Type II – A solid conversion by Activision of this excellent shooter.
    • Manchester United Europe – A solid soccer game.
    • Beast Busters – An excellent conversion by Activision of the SNK arcade game.
  • ST
    • 3D Construction Kit – A 3D game construction set from Domark.
    • Galdregon’s Domain – An adventure game reminiscent of Dungeon Master but not as good.
  • C64
    • Multimix 2 – A collection of older games including Beach Head, Beach Head II, and Raid Over Moscow. All of these are excellent Commodore 64 classics.
    • Hawkye – A difficult action/shooter from Thalamus.
    • Gary Lineker’s Hotshots – A decent soccer game for the C64.
    • Galdregon’s Domain – Like the ST version above, this one isn’t very good either.
  • PC
    • Mario Andretti’s Racing – An excellent racing simulation for the time.
    • heart of China – A solid adventure game from Dynamix set in 1920s China.
  • PC Engine
    • Hatris – Like Tetris but featuring hats. A good puzzle game from Bullet-Proof Software.
  • MegaDrive
    • Sonic the Hedgehog – The classic Sega platformer.
    • M1 Abrams Battle Tank – A solid tank simulator from Sega though I like this kind of game better on the PC.
    • Zero Wing – An excellent horizontal shooter from Toaplan.
    • Fire Mustang – An apparently terrible World War II themed horizontal shooter from Taito.
  • Nintendo
    • Captain Skyhawk – An action/shooter where you are all that stands between Earth and alien domination. Separated into three different subgames.
  • Lynx
    • Ninja Gaiden – An excellent conversion of the side-scrolling beat-em-up for the Lynx.
    • PacLand – Another excellent conversion, this time of the Pac-Man platform game inspired by the cartoon.
    • Warbirds – A good World War I combat sim but with game play that gets a bit repetitive.
    • APB – Yet another excellent arcade conversion. This one is an overhead driving game in which you take the roll of the California Highway Patrol.
  • Game Boy
    • Rescue Princess Blobette – A sequel to the NES game A Boy and His Blob.
    • Castellian – An action game in which you must make it to the top of a tower before time runs out.
    • Nobunaga’s Ambition – An excellent strategy game that also appeared on the NES.
