Mayor of Dover, Kent, England It is belived that these Warrens were descended from the Varennes (Guarennes ) of Picardy, in France. who bore a similar, but simpler coat of arms of -Gules, a cross gold ( Dictionaire de la Noblesse ... France, tome 19 ) the Warrens coat of arms - Azure, a cross, in each of the dexter chiefand sinister base points a martlet, in each of the sinister chief and dexterbase points a chaplet, all gold - British arms for the Warrens of Dover andRipple. "Historical Southern Families" Vol. # 18, page # 369 by - Boddie, CS, 69, .B582. "Virginia Historical Genealogies" p. 238, by - Boddie 929.3755, B 631 v. --- The progenitors of this family were the Warrens of Kent County, England. As shown in Boddie's Virginia Historical Genealogies, p 238, and Southside Virginia Families II, p. 369, their pedigree has been well authenticated from the latter half of the fifteenth century when William Warren was principal Customs Officer of the Cinque Ports, and was recorded in the Municipal Records as Mayor of Dover in 1493. He died in 1506 and was buried in the Church of St. Peter in Dover. He was apparently a man of considerable fortune, and left all of his houses and lands to his wife Joanne, for life, and thereafter to his son John. ("Historical Soutnern Families" Vol XVIII, by Boddie.) !FGS provided by Mrs. W. Spencer, 620 Ave. Del Oro, Sonoma, CA 95476 dated Nov 1985. --- This William was born in 1459 and died in 1506. He was possibly married to a woman named Joan Orwell. He may have had three children, John, Jane, and William. John is the only son who survived him. Boddie quotes: "Chief Customer of Sandwick, Dover and the Members thereof, that is, principal customs officer of the Cinque Ports; and he is recorded in the municipal records as Mayor of Dover in 1493. He died in 1506 and was buried in the Church of St. Peter, Dover, 'within the Chapel of our Ladie...before her image there.' After bequests toward the reparation of the parish church, and for a yearly obit to be said for him by a master and brethren of the Maison Dieu, William Warren (?) all of his 'houses and lands as well within the Towne, Port, and Libertie of Dover as within the Shyre of Kent, and alsoe...being in the Lordship of Marke & within the Marches of Calye, to his wife, Joane, for life; with reversion to his son, John, in (?) general.'"
