  Benjamin married Harriet Pickerle, duaghter of Simon and Mary (Hodgebeth) Pickeral, 22 Dec 1848 in Buchanan Co, MO. 1850 Census: Washington Twp, Buchanan Co, MO page 34 1860 Census: Quitman P O, Nodaway Co, MO page 59 1870 Census: Washington Twp, Buchanan Co, MO page 712 In the 1900 Washington Twp, Buchanan Co, MO, Benjamin and Harriet had 11 children with 7 children living. This seems to be in error as Dixie listed 13 children with 9 living in 1900. Some of the information on Benjamin's family came from Ellye DeSpain, wife of George Martin DeSpain, a great grandson. Dixie (Shafer) Winkler, whose husband is a gggrandson, stated that many Despains are buried in the Despain Cemetery in the French Bottom area of St. Joseph, MO.
