Last Modified 24 Aug 20151 - Mary's inheritance included the lands and baronies of Cairny in Forfar and Ballinbreich in Fife. The castle at Ballinbreich became the home of this branch of the Leslies until the 7th Earl of Rothes built Leslie House (Fife) in the 17th century. 'Ballinbreich' is the battle cry of the Leslies.
To denote the importance of the Abernethy inheritance, Sir Andrew 'Quartered' the Abernethy Arms with his own (he probably had to to secure it for his family). The Abernethy 'Lion' appears in the Rothes Arms to this day with the black ribbon through them (Riband Sable) indicating that the Abernethy inheritance was of equal importance to the Leslie titles.
From Sir Andrew and Mary's union descended the remaining Lords Leslie, the Earls of Rothes and Ross and the first Baron of Balquhain who in turn founded the families of all the Leslies in Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany and Russia.
Mary's marriage to Sir Andrew brought Abernethys into the Leslie Clan as a Sept but the family and name continued and though small, remain one of the oldest Scottish families going back to the 13th century.
2 - Sir Andrew married Maria the younger daughter and co-heiress of Alexander of Abernethy in 1317 gaining lands in Fife and Forfar.
He signed the declaration of Arbroath in 1320 and was dead by 1324.[S474] Colquoun_Cunningham.ged, Jamie Vans.
