I was reading a British game magazine from June 1984 (is available as PDF
on archive.org - if anyone cares I can try to find the download address)
where an article says:
| Video Vault International are bringing out the Commodore Emulator for
| £12.95. Once loaded into your machine, it emulates the Sinclair
| operating system and allows you to run your favourite Sinclair
| games. Commodore 64 owners should soon be able to load and run Spectrum
| software on their machines [...]
I was curious if this works. Especially since a C64 has a 6510 CPU and a
Spectrum an Z80.
I don't own a real Commodore 64 so emulate it with the VICE emulator. I
also found a program in my collection which has "Spectrum Emulator
(1985)" in its name. But although the program loads it just doesn't
start. RUN just returns the cursor.
So I wonder if this is for real. Has anybody ever had a working Spectrum
emulator for the Commodore 64? Not important if on the real machine or
emulated itself.

I rember a spectrum emulator for sure on my C64. It was slow and probably
the emulation was not complete or perfect. I used a few times to run
some spectrum basic programs (from what I can remember of something happening
30 years ago).
If you are really patient, I might find the right floppy disk where it is
recorded (one day and if luck happens).

The CPU difference is irrelevant (since that's what "emulation" means)
.... BUT whether such an emulation would be fast enough to be usable is
another question.
I've never heard of that emulator. It maybe be that it was partly
hardware and requires the emulation cartridge to be plugged into a real
C64 to work.

Of course. You probably could emulate an x86 CPU on a C64. But the speed
is the problem. That's why I mentioned the "way different" CPU before.

The article doesn't say. Will see if I find the next issue of that
magazine if it's mentioned there with more detail.

Not really that important. If by chance it crosses your path though it'll
be nice. :-)

Of course the real question is why would anyone want to emulate a
crappy toy like the Spectrum on a real computer like the C64?!?
Then again, even today some people are still stupid enough to want to
emulate / virtualise crappy Windoze garbage on their Apple Mac
computer.

Yep, it's really "stupid" to want a computer that works, doesn't suffer
idiotic malware and viruses, doesn't look like the cheap knock-off of
someone else's work that it is, ... I guess that's why sales of Apple
computers rise every year while most other makers are declining. :-\

There were some games especially written for the Specci, and not or much
later ported to the Commodore 64. So I'd say yes, some C64 users might
want to have a Specci emulator.

I found <http://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12346> which says
it mainly emulates the Sinclair BASIC on the C64. But already PEEK and
POKE shall stop the emulation.
