Sounds to me like a Cordwainer Smith story.  I'm sure that we're going to get
a few good, thorough write-ups on Cordwainer Smith, works by subject and
chronology and edition, so I'll defer.  ( And looking forward to seeing same;
I've read all I can find by the noted astronomer, several times over.)
