Does anyone know how to setup VICE on Ubuntu to run a BBS? All of the
tutorials have showed how to either hook a real C64 up or to run on
WinVICE.I have not had good luck running anything on WINE and I don't
really want to try and run a Windows Home XP box as any kind of a server.
I would prefer to run it on Linux with a real server. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Interesting.

How do you want to hook it up? Have a dial-up modem? If, does it work in
Linux itself?

Then I think that VICE, at least the Linux, has no network support at
all. Which would be nice, not only because I would like to plat Artillery
Duel with a pal I used to play it back in 1983 who is some thousand miles
away from me now.

linux vice has ethernet emulation just like the win32 port - and netplay
too.

Oh? How do I activate it? Before I sent my last posting my was examining
all menus in VICE (x64) and couldn't find anything beside RS232
emulation, which came closest. Which didn't help.

So it is possible for 2 people on two different cities to play a game together?

in versions up to (and including) 2.4, it is hiding in the "snapshots" menu
(and it has been moved into "files" now)

should work :) take network delay into consideration though - it will
probably not work very well with anything that requires fast reaction.

Some of the most brilliant people I have met on the web are expert reverse
engineers, and I am honoured to count among my friends some capable (and
some half-mythical) crackers. In fact reverse engineering is the sine qua
non for fighting back in a world that is getting more and more anti-
democratic and oligarchic, where money counts more than knowledge (why?) and
where citizens exist only in order to consume useless gadgets and do and
believe what they are told to, surely not to think on their own nor to co-
decide how things should be.

Oh (again). I never knew there was a "file" menu and more. I always
started VICE in full screen and there is none to be seen then.

Yes, is in "snapshot" here. I wonder what it's doing there. "files" also
makes not much sense to me. I'd put create a "network" menu and put that
and other related stuff there.

Thanks. Now I have to get this friend to test it with me. I hope that a
game with Windows <-> Linux VICE will work.

Thanks for your help.

So far I tested it with my two computers (connected via WLAN). Because I
don't get my virtual joysticks to work (that's another story, probably
hardware related; stupid HP keyboard) I was just typing stuff and saw it
on the other computer with quite some delay.

It looked almost like a VNC connection. But assume it's much more.

I will have to wait until the weekend and then hopefully find the time to
test it with a friend on another continent.
