Hello everyone. I have a great working 8580 SID chip that I cannot use for my current application as it requires the 9 VOLT 6581 instead.
So, here's my "proposition" to everyone.
I'm seeking to TRADE my (1) 8580 SID for (2) 6581 SID's <as long as they BOTH WORK! This is due mostly to the fact that 8580's are a tad bit more "rare" so I think that a "Two-4-One" is a FAIR proposition.
Please get back to me whenever you get the chance to.
Thanks for your time everyone. :):)

I can offer you ONE 6581AR4 for your 8580. maybe 8580 is a bit more rare I
don't know that but 6581 is most wanted than the 8580

I can't offer anyone anything :-)
Tho it is an interesting question as to which type of SID is rarer-
there were more 6581s manufactured than 8580s. On the other hand the
older SIDs were /probably/ more prone to failure.
Most of the new Demo music produced for the SID these days seems to
be primarily written for the new 8580s. Personally i find that a
tiny bit disappointing,as I prefer the classic sound of the 6581.

Same. The value of the 6581 to the 8580 is about the same so a two for one
swap does seem a bit ambitious ;-)

Well being that I get the "actual computer itself" from either a thrift store, yard sale, or from Mr. Bernardo for $10, then spending more than that for a MERE CHIP is quite unlikely. ;)
Thanks for the heads up Clocky! :))

The market depicts what they are worth. I certainly couldn't obtain a C64 or
C128 for $10, I wish I could!

Sounds like you need to spread the work about your interest a
bit more. There are plenty of people who just want to get rid of
this stuff and $10 can soon start to seem expensive. I've got a
pile of C64s this way, though I'd like to find a C128 somewhere.

You presumably don't live in Australia or Europe.
$10 C64's and 128's supplies dried up a very long time ago.

Nope, I'm with you on the rock of AUS. However I might guess you
live in a city. Perhaps the supplies there dried up there some
time ago, but the country can still be fertile ground.

I'm guessing you are over east somewhere but I haven't seen a Commodore in
the wild for quite some time.
Ebay.com.au seems to reflect the relative scarcity.

Victoria, actually. Perhaps this is where all my luck gets
used up. :)
> Ebay.com.au seems to reflect the relative scarcity.
What you see on Ebay is what _gets_ to ebay. There are many
people who either don't know what they can get for these
machines on the net, or don't care enough to bother. The
result is that many Commodores and other machines get thrown
out regularly. I just try to be the step before the bin.
For example, last year I got a 1571 (now my main Commodore
drive) along with a lot of other stuff from a local bloke. He
wanted to clear some space. If I look on Ebay now, there is
only one 1571 for sale in Aus, in fact I'll have to watch what
it goes for.

It won't be $10.
Sure the odd system pops up but it's nothing like years ago where you
could walk into any op-shop, swap meet or garage sale and literally buy
piles of stuff for $5.
The only people I know with C= equipment either don't want to part with
it for nostalgic reasons or they know what it can fetch on ebay and
price it accordingly.

Well you're sure right there, $71.01 with six days to go!

Most of my local Op-Shops don't sell 240V electronics for fear that
someone might try to cover a break in the power cable insulation using
their finger. Some still accept the stuff, it just goes straight to the
tip. Sometimes games, joysticks etc. still make their way to the shelves
though.

Well if you really wish you could find some cheap stuff, you could
always try a bit of paper on the local town noticeboard etc.. I've never
done this for fear of being inundated with C64s and Vic-20s, not to
mention 486s.

I'm not sure about the situation right now (March,2013) tho the last
time I checked Ebay it struck me that the North American 8 bit
Commodore retro people had a steady supply of hardware being put up
for auction for pretty reasonable prices. Guess that's just a result
of simply Commodore being more popular over there than for example the
UK back in the day.
Still, we PAL users had even more awesome software to play with so
between the choice of having cheaper hardware or optimum software I'd
personally go for the latter.

C= was very popular here in Australia but our population was relatively
miniscule compared to the US hence there's simply much less left.
I would certainly go for optimum software also... and NTSC... blegh!

But the other side of that is there are hence less enthusiasts
today as well. In fact the only Commodore event since 2000 that
I know happens in this country is that "Brisbane C64 Night".
By the way, I was offered an Apple IIc yesterday. I was already
given one a while ago though, so he'll keep it for now.

He was talking about 5.25" floppy disks, so I don't think it's a
plus.

Gotcha. Well, no need to replace my //c -- it's running great and got on hackaday before so it has some fun history.

Fair enough, though I'd call them more Demoscene events than
Commodore events. Still, even three events (two with modern
machines mixed in) hardly represents much compared to the
stream of things Robert Bernardo posts about from America.

supply wouldn't meet or exceed demand for Commodores in Aus
compared to elsewhere.

Because most of them are in landfill by now.

Yeah, I guess it wouldn't surprise me to learn that Australians
are more tip-happy than people elsewhere. I can't really compare
though, not having lived overseas.

Thanks a lot Robert for the C-64's! They BOTH had sids in them, but now I'll have to check them and see which one (if any) work- hopefully both will. :)
