Pull the "G5" box off and look. There might be a little plastic retention
rivet on top if it's never been inspected after it left the factory; usually
you have to snap that off. At the shop they have spares for it, but you won't,
so expect the "G5 box" just to wiggle loosely after that.

Then, look for leakage, simple as that. *Any* moisture should be of concern,
especially if it was "virgin." Make sure they have not slipped off the CPU
dies.

Assuming visual inspection passes, I'd do a couple passes in AHT/ASD and
then burn it in for 48 or 72 hours on Highest Performance (just leave it on
and see if it overheats).

That's difficult to replace, but not impossible. The service manual can
explain. Just make sure the headers on the *logic board* are okay.

I think it stinks cosmetically, but the unit is probably salvageable.

It's hard labour, mostly getting the power supply out. I would really advise
against it assuming the damage is cosmetic -- it's probably not going to be
as good as you would expect and can you really trust a guy like this to send
you a pristine case?

Take the money, check the board thoroughly. It's probably still operable.

That doesn't look to me like damage from shipping??? I would just get as much money back from them as you can get so you can at least buy the parts you need to fix it. The damage to the case doesn't look like it will affect the performance at all. I could fix that the damage to the case if I had it with a plastic hammer. So it looks like all you need would be a hard drive and the sled as long as the caps aren't leaking...

I agree.

I saw those HD jumper pins all bent that are recessed down into a hole
and thought "looks like someone bent these pins on purpose" because I
can't see anyway these get bent in shipping. I own a similar G5 and to
me this damage looks beyond anything you could do by dropping. I think
someone mangled this computer purposefully.

Me three, those pins shouldn't be connected afaik on a SATA drive anyway. And no way could that cind of damage have been done if the drive was installed in it's bay. Bending the SATA connecter down that way needs someone to yank down really hard on the cable; force enough to do that would demolish even a G5 case.

I have done it and it is not too difficult. There is a guide at
iFixIt.com that takes you step-by-step through the process.

Like Cameron, I suggest that you take the money from the seller and
then decide if you want to keep the G5, or sell it to someone else who
is interested in the operation and not the looks of your system. A
new case is going to be expensive for the seller to find and buy for
you, so if you want to keep it for yourself and looks are important,
you might want to ask for the new case.

Good luck.

I'm not talking about the hard disk; I'm talking about getting the cable
back on the board. You can try to reattach it, but if it has to be
replaced, you have to clip and destroy the old one and rethread the new one
through the hard drive bay. It's not as easy as it looks.
