[VICE] Why does net play need the exact same version on the other side? [message #284462] Sat, 21 February 2015 16:50

I am still trying to get somebody to test the netplay function of the
VICE emulator with me. Was lucky and a guy from the UK was willing to
test it with me.

We both had port 6502 open and so each could be server or client at some
point. What happened is that VICE usually froze after the other tried to
connect as client. Or the client crashed right away when initiating the
connection.

I did some research and some web sources suggest that you need exactly
the same versions on both machines. Which was not the case here. We not
even had the same OS (he has Mac, I have Linux).

If this is true, why so? Is the netplay function this experimental that
there are frequent updates from version to version which makes them
incompatible to any other version?
