   I was the original poster
   The system I was running this on was Microsoft Fortran 77 for
   IBM compatible PC.  

   Also the original problem was
	  
	  var = 'x' // var1

	  different variable names.

	  It seems that the PC version just doesn't support this stuff.
	  These commands worked fine on the UNIX version I was using.
