The Educator 64 was a version of the Commodore 64 produced by Commodore for the education market . They were in a case similar to the older PET machines but had a regular Commodore 64 motherboard inside. However, the built-in monitor was not color, it only displayed shades of green.
Apparently, the New York State Department of Education did not want to use the regular Commodore 64 because they felt that it would be too easy to steal. And Commodore, never one to miss out on saving a buck, used refurbished Commodore 64 motherboards and whatever old PET cases they had laying around. The case made specifically for the Educator 64 was mostly heavy duty plastic as opposed to the older PET cases which were metal. However, many Educator 64s were produced using leftover or refurbished PET cases so there are a number of “rare” variations of the Educator 64 which was low production anyway.
The Educator 64 came along a little too late as Apple had already pretty much cornered the education market with the Apple II. Also, there were many software titles that worked with a normal Commodore 64 but couldn’t be used with the Educator 64 because of the lack of color.
