The Sega Game Gear was not the first color portable system as that honor goes to the Atari Lynx. It was, however, technically superior to the Game Boy in many ways yet never really was able to compete. The Game Gear had a pretty good game library though nowhere near what the Game Boy had. It was quite a bit more expensive than the Game Boy, particularly early in its life, had much poorer battery life, and was released several years later giving the Game Boy a market dominating head start.
I had a Game Gear for many years starting in June 1993 but sold it a few years ago. The games I remember playing most were Columns (Sega’s answer to Tetris that came with the Game Gear), Sonic the Hedgehog and Space Harrier. I remember wanting to get the Master Gear converter that allowed you to play Sega Master System games on it but never did. The screen, while pretty decent for its day is pretty horrible by today’s standards and I just couldn’t see myself using it even for nostalgia’s sake. This is one case where I think I prefer emulation to the real thing.
