In 1989, it was still early days for Nintendo Power with this issue still being a bimonthly issue. The September/October 1989 issue of Nintendo Power includes:

Features

  • Duck Tales – A platform game based on the Disney cartoon of the same name.
  • Dragon Warrior – Classic RPG for the NES. An excellent game overall though it could get a bit repetitive.
  • Hoops – For the time, this was a pretty good basketball game but better ones would be along shortly.
  • Fester’s Quest – I had this game and it was one of the hardest and most frustrating game I have ever played.
  • Roger Rabbit – An adventure game based on the movie of the same name.
  • NES Satellite – In terms of peripherals, there was more experimentation with the NES that perhaps any other console. This was one of the more practical ones that simply provided a way to play four player games. However, there weren’t a huge number of games that supported it.
  • Game Boy – Perhaps the first detailed look at the most famous portable game system of all time.
  • Video Shorts – Short looks at some of the latest games including Sky Shark, Casino Kid, Castlequest, Jordan vs. Bird: One on One, Bad Street Brawler and Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Previews

  • Willow – An adventure game from Capcom based on the movie of the same name.
  • River City Ransom – Classic beat-em-up game designed for two player co-op play.
  • Batman – Based on the 1989 Batman movie with Jack Nicholson, Michael Keaton and Kim Basinger.
  • NES Play Action Football – Classic early football game for the NES.

Departments

  • Counselor’s Corner – How to get through Section 17 in Area 4 in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles plus how to defeat the enemies at the end of Areas 4 and 5; where to find the hammer in Zelda II, how to get to Castlevania in Simon’s Quest; how to get over the wide gap and tall pipe in Ridley’s Hide Out in Metroid; and how to get through Section 10-3 in The Adventures of Lolo.
  • Classified Information – Codes and other secrets for 1943, Ninja Gaiden, Star Soldier, Mega Man II, Tecmo Bowl, Guardian Legend, Zelda II, and Legacy of the Wizard.
  • Pak Watch – Previews of upcoming games including Shadowgate, Bases Loaded II, Gilligan’s Island, Code Name: Viper, Tombs and Treasure, Godzilla, A Boy and His Blob, and more.
  • Players’ Pulse – Letters from readers, mostly with praise for the NES and/or Nintendo Power.
  • Top 30 – At the top of this list this month are Zelda II, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Ninja Gaiden.
  • NES Achievers – Top scores for 1943, Blaster Master, Bomberman, Cobra Command, Double Dragon, Lee Trevino’s Fighting Golf, Gotcha!, Gradius, Guardian Legend, Gun Smoke, Gyruss, Hudson’s Adventure Island, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Jackal, Kid Niki, Legendary Wings, Legacy of the Wizard, Life Force, and many more.
  • NES Journal – A look at an upcoming TV show called Captain N: Game Master.

…and more!
