Such strategies are currently popular in many artificial intelligence projects.
Saint Augustine tells us about Latin etymologies of interest:

cogitate <= L. cogitare = think <= L. con + agitare = shake together
intelligent <= L. intelligere = understand <= L. inter + legere = choose among

This "generate/select" idea is not all that new and radical. Does anybody out
in net land know where in St. Augustine's writings this discussion is found?

Thanks,

Dean Douthat
