Mr. Bill Rupp, noscvax!rupp:

My open letter to Bryce Nesbitt did not quote Bryce's "magic incantation", but
maybe it should have. I have had a number of inquiries like yours, all saying,
"What *is* the magic incantation you are writing about?"

I dumped the header information related to Bryce's message, but downloaded the
rest. Here it is:
-----------

To all Commodore 1541 owners!! If you have any protected software that
"bangs" the head on a read error, enter the following magical incantation
before loading - or add it to the boot of the program:

    OPEN1,8,15:PRINT#1,"M-W"CHR$(106)CHR$(0)CHR$(1)CHR$(136)

This will prevent the bang of the head, and keep your drive in alignment!

                -Bryce Nesbitt of 1541 Flash!-

----------

It works.
