The only time a problem comes up is if a system running Sys V that
truncates to 6 chars has a name greater than 6 chars and tries
to contact a site that doesn't truncate or truncates to 7 chars.

There are two solutions that don't involve changing code:

1) Set up entries truncated to 6 chars on the non-Sys V sites
that talk to the Sys V site with the problem. Then simply
use the truncated form as the sitename.

2) (obvious) change the sitename

In cases where people don't want to change their code, option
(2) may well prove the easiest.
