Why do 45 rpm records have bigger center holes than 33's > and 78's ? It's my understanding that RCA (I think) tried to establish an "new standard" by putting larger holes into records that went at a different speed. Eventually, the new standard became the standard for singles only, and the competitive standard (small holes at 33rpm) became the LP standard. Why were 78s abandoned? I'm not sure, but I can guess...you can't fit much onto one...it goes too quickly. ...bob garmise...at&t bell labs, columbus...
