Another in a series (initially started by Greg gkj@talcott Kuperberg):

A visiting western journalist was allowed a meeting with a prominent
Professor at the University of Warsaw, a man widely held to be the
smartest man in Poland. During the course of the discussion he asked the
Professor if he could single out three wishes that he wanted to be filled.
The Professor answered, "Of course. I wish that Poland would be
invaded by the Chinese."
The journalist was slightly taken aback, but asked politely what the
second wish would be.
"I wish that again Poland would be invaded by the Chinese."
At this point, the journalist is wondering whether the professor has
not grown feeble with age, or even if what he has heard in the West about
Poles are true, but he keeps quiet and instead asks what the Professor's third
wish would be.
"I wish that once again Poland would be invaded by the Chinese."

Finally, the journalist cannot take it any longer, and asked how the
Professor could wish such a misfortune on his country, not once but three
times.

The Professor replied, "It is worth it. You see, to invade Poland
three times, they would have to cross Russia six times."

(Note: I'm sure versions exist for most of the other countries of the Eastern
Bloc.)
