Summary: anyone have stats on religious support for Israel pre-48?

I just reread "The Chosen" the other night. Hadn't read it in many
years, and I'd forgotten about the anti-Zionism it portrays on the
part of the Chasidic community in the story. Does anyone have real
data on how widespread the support for Israel was among the observant
Jewish community before independence was proclaimed?
