As much as I hate to admit it (I love V) the series has the same kinds of twistsand turn in plots and sub-plots as your typical soap.

To recap, the release of the red dust would act as a doomesday device polluting
the atmosphere and disrupting the Earth's food chain for centuries (it would 
kill them lizards too, thus ending the series). The device on Nathan Bates' 
wrist is simply used as a deterrant to an all-out alien attack on Los Angeles
(see US/USSR arms race for reference).

Therefore, to wit, etc., even though we saw Nathan Bates' get "killed" (shot by
his faithful companion and enforcer Mr. Chang) he must still be alive as the reddust has not been released. Thus he will "miraculously" reappear in a future
episode.

As for Otherworld, I just started watching the show (Feb. 2) and think its    
premise is interesting but no judgement yet on quality. I'd still rather watch
E/R!
