 BTW: The "Official" way to get the treasure south of the lake involves solving
the puzzle of the viewing table. There is another way (called cheating) that
you can get the treasure without ever going into the viewing room. Do the
following:

Leave your lamp and all goodies in the Creepy Crawl

Go to the lake and swim to the southern shore

Save the state of the game.

Go south twice. This will result in getting killed about 80% of the time. When
that happens just restore and do it again.

Eventually you will be allowed to the second room without geting killed. From
there you can go and get the treasure. You have a simialar problem when
leaving but since the lamp is in the creepy crawl there are only two dark
rooms that must be traversed to get to it. The same technique will also get 
you out.
