There's a small spring under the space bar that holds the bar away from the 
contact until you press the bar.   If this spring falls out, the contact is 
closed by the weight of the bar, and the cursor goes sailing around and 
around the screen.  Replace the spring and it's fixed.

This happened to me when I first bought a 64.  I exchanged that one for 
another, discovering the spring business only when I (extra carefully, this 
time) unpacked it.
