A colleague of mine is modelling (human) memory operation and is
after a program that will calculate least-squares best fit for a
data set given:

        a.  A particular function
        b.  Constraints for function coefficients

I understand that something called the "Steppit
technique/algorithm" is an example of something would do the job
nicely.

Can anyone out there come to his assistance with a piece of
public or private domain software?

Thanks in advance,
