Most HP terminals have an "insert character" key on the keyboard for
screen editing used in HP3000 business programs.  If you accidentally hit
this key, the behaviour you described might result (i.e. overwriting of
characters in a room).  If this is the problem, hit the "insert character"
key again to toggle the mode off.
