Old frames are usually the old Schwinn "Big-D" type to me.

Mountain Bikes have diamond frams, double-butted, etc. for 
great strength.  Also most frames don not have clearance for
wide tires.

Some expensive m-bike frames are Chromium-Molybdenum Alloy.
