Statistics Lines: 14 I'd say it's rather early for the broom. The Mets are 4.5 games out. In 1969, the Cubs led by 9.5 games on August 15 or thereabouts, and the Mets won by more than 8 games. George Will's latest column in Newsweeks is a full page tribute to the Cubs, in which he says that "the Cubs are William Jennings Bryan, a prarie uprising against the highfalutin spat-wearing Easterners, the Mets and the Phillies". The simile may be stronger than most Cub fans would like; after all, Bryan was pretty famous for some September fades. And didn't he lose three times (1969, 1973, and ...)?
