It was really nice to be able to make a manuver without having the added problem of having to deal with the instructors harrasment as well. He would emphasize MY letting HIM know what mistakes I had made. That was very helpful in teaching me to reconize mistakes and correct for them on my own. He never raised his voice ever, and put me though a very demanding flight the day before my private check ride. In short, strict training laid back CFI's are not mutually exclusive.
