The movie was called "The Final Countdown."  It also starred Kirk Douglas.
I think it either came out in 1980 or 1981.  

How they got to 1945 and back was a little hokey, but once they were there,
I kinda liked the story line.  I especially liked the part where they were
trying to find out where they are, so they send out a few fighters on a
scouting mission.  There is a fishing boat drifting around, so they make
a slow pass at about 600 mph.  A senator is a passenger on the boat.  
Confusion reigns on said boat:

       "What the HELL was that?"
       "I don't know, but they must be ours, they have U.S. markings"
       "The damn defense department never tells us Anything!!"

(or something like that)
