So, OK, I've read flames ad nauseaum about Reagan's joke, and
since I'm not a Reagan fan I should have enjoyed it, but...
[FLAME ON]
Is this sort of lame-brained finger-pointing typical of the level
of criticism of which Reagan's foes are capable? The impression it leaves
is, "Gosh, we're all too stupid to make reasonable objections to Reagan's
stands on complex issues, but we'll bray real loud if he says anything
even brain-damage cases like us can see is dumb!"
When the evidence of Reagan's record on Central America, arms
control, social programs, etc., etc., is available to pick on, jumping
on him for a dumb joke is worse than a waste of time, it makes you
look like you're grasping at straws, or too uninformed to make substantive
criticism. The "logic" of arguing that such a faux pas gives us some
special insight into Reagan's true character escapes me, and the need
for such tortured reasoning in the face of far clearer indications of
Reagan's policy goals escapes me, as well.
Let's leave the cattiness to Rona Barrett, and use our thinking
ability on issues worthy of thought. Even Reagan's joke wasn't as dumb
as some of the stridently silly responses to it I've seen.
[FLAME OFF]

If anyone has any *humorous* responses to Reagan's 'joke', please
post them; this flame does not apply to you.
