His credentials are excellent, although at the moment he is somewhat unknown, and more of an "author's author". (E.g., Updike was greatly influenced by him.) Most of his books are novels or farces about 20th century English life. One, "Concluding", is both a novel and a work of Science Fiction. The elements of Sci Fi are very subtle, and allow the work to appear largely realistic and belonging to the world of the present, or slight future. - Toby Robison (not Robinson!) allegra!eosp1!robison decvax!ittvax!eosp1!robison
