Uh...back to basics, huh?  Then didn't you ever hear of start bits
and stop bits??  It's more like 10 or 11 bits/byte, depending on if you were
using one or two stop bits.  That makes it more like 16 seconds.

As a rule, figure 300 baud >roughly< translates to 30 characters/sec, 1200
to 120, 9600 to 960, etc.  Also, usually subtract 10% from whatever figure you
get by this method to account for system and/or protocol overhead.  You'll be
surprised at how close this simple method comes to predicting xfer times.
