I was just going to send a letter to the first article author, but
since so many people seem curious ...

The song is "I'm Willin'" written by Lowell George. A late 60's, early 70's
band called Seatrain (Peter Rowan, Richard Greene, good band) played the first
version I ever heard of it. Linda Ronstadt did a version of it, as well as
the Byrds, I think (it may have been on "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" - I'm not
sure). Definitely a classic.

Lowell George wrote a lot of truck songs as well as some other stuff -
"Truck Stop Girl" is another classic. I'd place him in about the same
class as Hoyt Axton - been around for ages and his songs turn up in the
darndest places but never really well known. I have seen one album around
performed by him, I haven't heard it.

"I've been kicked by the wind,
Driven by the sea,
Had my head stoved in but I'm still on my feet
Yes I'm still...
I smuggled smoke from Mexico,
Get baked by the sun every time I go to Mexico.."
