Message-ID: <785@abnjh.UUCP> Date: Wed, 8-Aug-84 13:13:40 EDT Article-I.D.: abnjh.785 Posted: Wed Aug 8 13:13:40 1984 Date-Received: Fri, 10-Aug-84 07:58:45 EDT References: <684@sbcs.UUCP> Organization: ATTIS, NJ Lines: 66 I found this puzzle in an old issue of Science digest, It's one of my favorites. There are 3 men living in 3 seperate houses within a fenced in courtyard. Following a particulary vicious argument over a gardenhose, they made up their minds never to cross each others paths again. This seemed like a good idea at the time (considering the heated debate over gun control :-) ), however, they all had to go to work at the same time of the morning. They settled on this: Each man was to use the gate directly opposing his house, the man living in house A had to exit through gate A, the man living in house B had to exit through gate B, and the man living in house C had to stumble out through gate C (he didn't take well to mornings). I'm not sure if this diagram will be readable on other terminals, so I'll do my best to describe it as well. This is a square courtyard with house A being in a corner, flush against the fence. His exit is diagonally across from his house (in the far corner). Houses B and C are to the right and left of house A set away from the fence (on either arm of the 90 degree angle formed by house A) and their exits are directly across from them. The object is to draw their paths to their respective exits without their paths crossing. ________________________ | A | | |___| ___ | | d | C | | | |___| | | d | | | | ___ | | | B | d B | |___| | | |________________ ___ A C Where d represents the location of the door. Only kidding ! :-)
