A few weeks ago we had a power interruption that affected our entire
plant (computer room included). While the power loss/surge was
subjected to all our computing equipment only the Systems Industries
tri-desnity tape drive was damaged. The rest of the engineering
computers and peripherals (2 VAX 750's, 2 Pyramids, 2 CDC 9766's,
and 2 Kenedy tape drives) weren't hurt.

The Systems Industries' technicians took about 1 week to bring the
drive back to life, replacing 1 breaker panel, a power supply 5 times,
and a formatter board 2 times. We just received an estimate of the
repair costs - $10,700 (unfortunately, we weren't under a maintenance
contract).

The morals to this story are: 1) if you are considering the purchase of
Systems Industries equipment - consider the cost of a maintenance
contract, and 2) if you own Systems Industries equipment that is not
yet under a maintenance contract - do so quickly.

PS: I would appreciate hearing from others who have comments on the
maintenance of Systems Industries equipment.
