Second question first: yes, they are only in the animated version. As to how
they "migrated", it was easy. Niven himself wrote a script for the animated show
that was an adaptation of his Known Space story "The Soft Weapon" (which is in
his collection NEUTRON STAR). It was amusing to see Spock take the place of
Nessus. Also, other animated episodes made reference to the Kzinti.
	In one of the STAR TREK LOG books (which adapt the animated episodes),
I think it was #5, Alan Dean Foster mentions that the Caitians (of which the
alternate communications officer, Lt. M'Hress, is one) are another branch of
the same race that produced the Kzinti, a la the Vulcans and the Romulans.
