One of the arguments against single parenting suggested was adoption. It is
worth pointing out that it almost would be impossible for for a single person
to adopt a normal healthy baby. According to a friend who is a fertility
counselor, an unmarried woman MIGHT be allowed to adopt an older, handicapped
child, if she met a variety of conditions whcih are much more stringent than
even those for a married couple. There is also something to be said for the
mutual growth of child-rearing (which doesn't happen in quite the same way
with an "older" child). Adoption might be a viable alternative if it were
easier. Did you ever notice all those personal ads in college newspapers
from sincere, loving, responsible couples looking for a baby to adopt?
