To get the portrait out, you should know that the game
allows you to "walk through curtain", and that where you
end up after walking depends on the room you were in
prior to entering the room with the large cube.

Also, there is a way out of the "small bare room" without
the Gnome helping you.  If you haven't figured that out, you
probably haven't found the stack of Zorkmid bills.

To enter the land of the dead, some versions allow you to
"exorcise", and some require that you perform the ceremony
(ring bell, light candles, read book).

To begin the endgame, you need all the points, and you need
the wraithlike figure to speak to you (similar to the
sepulchral [sic?] voice in Adventure).  After that happens,
you can open the Tomb of the Unknown Implementer.
