SwernofskyI am rather surprised that no one has mentioned Ray Brown's ''Reformed Sufi'' universe, which relates the ''Transmat'' matter transmission device and the religion(!) which develops due to it. Recent stories have developed an interesting twist to the store-and-forward method of matter transmission -- matter simulation! Rather than storing the pattern to real-world objects and duplicating them in the real-world, why not just place the ''object'' in a pattern for a small part of the universe (a pocket universe) and simulate its activity? After all, if you can store all that data you should also be able to process it! This leads to some interesting results. For example, the simulated world can run at normal speed, or faster or slower. Or backwards. Or with different ''physical laws.'' Or ... well, see the stories. (Is this the real world, or just a simulation?) -- Steve
