The local candy store now has a demo model of the YAESU FT 209 full feature 2 meter handheld. Its kind of a cross between the KENWOOD 2500 KENWOOD 2600 and YAESU 208. It has a 5 watts plus power output with a standard slip on battery pack (ala 2500). A large keypad lets enter frequency and functions and a very large LCD display shows all function and states that the the rig is in. Some improvements over the FT 208R is that the transmit offset is now stored with the recieve frequency an optional PL frequency can also stored. A much need reverse switch is now included. A combination transmit/recieve/battery analog meter lets you keep track of your rig. The best thing I noticed is that the audio is very clean as well as being louder, (many 208 users have noticed that the audio level is very low). A "maybe" feature is a vox operated mic, much like that of the YAESU FT 203. Some of the bad things I have found is that none of the 208/708 options will be compadable with the new 209. I had only had a short period of time to play with the unit, but with this town being very "PRO" YAESU i will probably be seeing and hearing may of the units on the air. Anyone got one yet, comments?????? Thanks 73 Gary W. Sanders N8EMR AT+T Bell Labs. Columbus,Ohio address cbnap!gws
