before anybody else flames at me about what seems a dumb proposal in the
notion that long identifiers will get truncated automatically, i KNOW it's
not "unix-babies"; some of us read this group to learn something.  anyway,
i got reactions (already) ranging from "looks good" to it'll make the
compiler bomb.  if it's a sys V vs. version 7 dependency, ok.  ernie harkins
