What an Olympiad...in spite of the Eastern-bloc boycott, occasionally-biased media coverage, sometimes-questionable officiating, and everything else, it was a fantastic event. Random comments and notes: Will we ever forget Gabriella Anderson-Schiess staggering into the Coliseum and pushing herself around the track to finish the women's marathon 37th? That's courage... Or what about Daley Thompson, a real class athlete, winning the decathalon and remaining quietly modest... Or Mary Lou Retton, gritting her teeth and nailing her vault for the gold medal... Or Edwin Moses just leaving the field behind (13 steps between hurdles!) in the 400m hurdles... Or Flo & the women's volleyball team, playing their hearts out for the silver medal...the men's volleyball team coming back to wipe out Brazil for the gold...the women's basketball team, led by Cheryl Miller, running all over the competition...and, of course, the men's team walking all the way to the gold. (Side note: I heard a commentator last night call B. Knight "brilliant" for his coaching effort in the Olympics...I should like to point out that my grandmother could have coached that team to the gold, considering the wealth of talent present there.) And all the other atheletes, the gymnasts from China, the divers from Great Britain, the marathoners from Canada, the runners from Tanzania...they were all wonderful, and a joy to watch.
