Berkeley Lines: 17 "Skyline" is a Spanish comedy which is easy to summarize, but hard to describe. A Spanish photographer comes to New York looking for work with a picture magazine "like Life or Newsweek." He rents a loft, meets some people, has some amusing encounters, and leaves. As you can see, nothing much happens. That's not the point, though. "Skyline" is a series of very witty and perceptive observations of New York life as viewed through the eyes of a foreigner that avoids stereotype and cliche. As a New Yorker, I was surprised by the accuracy of the director's observations. There aren't many belly laughs here, but there are a lot of smiles of recognition. The whimsical sense of humor reminds me a lot of Bill Forsythe ("Gregory's Girl" and "Local Hero"), although without the zaniness. If you're looking for a good-natured, quiet, easy- going comedy, I recommend "Skyline," if you can find it. I give it *** (out of ****). Wayne Citrin (ucbvax!citrin)
