Uh, not to jump into this too deeply...but please.  Nationalism
is a product of the 17th century.  Previous to that, loyalty
tended to be to your King; before that, increasingly smaller
units of geography and/or influence.  (It's been suggested that
the multinationals are the next step in ever-increasing spheres
of influence and commitment).
