This is a real downer to those of us who have followed Rose's
many-year chase for Ty Cobb's hit record.  Very few players can both
play and manage effectively, and it won't be that easy for Rose to
play regularly for the reds anyway.

I don't know what Cincinatti was thinking of.  Rose's longterm
value to the team is much, much greater if he gets the hit record
and becomes acknowledged, in a sense, as the greatest hitter of all
time.  They should get another manager for the present and let him
concentrate on the record.
