Let's see... 8 times 0 is zero, no carry; 8 times 8 is 64 -- put down
the 4 and carry 6; 8 times 4 is 32, add 6 is 38.
3840 divided by 300: 300 goes in 10 times, remainder of 840. 300
goes into 840 twice with a remainder of 240. (Bear with me -- now it
gets tricky). 300 goes into 240 .8 times. Therefore, I come
up with a figure of 12.8 seconds.

Your problem is, you've been using your Basic too much. I can still
do math in my head or on paper and come up with a result which
matches the result on my calculator (unless the batteries are low).

Or does UCLA teach you to use some esoteric number base I don't know
about? Gosh, indeed!

Yours in subtler flames,
