Last week, the -5V supply died in my console, taking with it the CPU chip,
video RAM, and {very likely} the console GROMs. At least my TI tech manual
shows all these things and possibly more using -5V. Since I have no test
equipment at home, I called TI to find out availability of replacement parts and
the possible extent of damage. They confirmed my worst fears, but told me that
I could exchange||repair my console for 28.50 dollars. So, I took them up on
their offer and excanged my old console. To test it, I put my Star Trek
cartridge in and got up to 375,000 points/level 5.2!! Guess that's a good omen!

Anyway, I advise putting a fan on your console to prevent this from
happening. I'm doing that as soon as I can.
No computer should die like that...

Also, some questions on other topics to hopefully stimulate discussion--

In an old issue of COMPUTE! I found the following way to check for speech
synthesizer from XBASIC:

	CALL PEEK(27672,@)
	IF @ THEN CALL SAY("")

My manuals tell me that "@" is a valid variable name, so I have no trouble with
that, but I thought that the IF statement had to say "IF @= THEN ..."
Can anyone enlighten me on that? It seems I could make my code smaller this way.

Also, I have heard of a LOAD that will disable the "QUIT" (FUNCTION =) button.
What value should I LOAD to what location?
The net may be interested in this info.

				Thanx--
