Sure, I was asked out to lunch just last month by somebody at
work.  She wanted to pay but I insisted that we split it.

As required in the original question, the asker did risk some
rejection by asking me out.  I accepted her invitation but with
some uneasyness.  I didn't know her that well but the surface
signs didn't look very promising.  (...like she wears designer jeans...)
On the other hand, she did ask me out and she does fix her own car.
The lunch was amiable but things didn't click.  I haven't asked
her out and she hasn't asked me out again.
