Why can't the ship be regenerated as was Spock? As the planet was breaking up it "infected" the hull of the ship and spit it back into space where is glowed for a while, squirmed, and then kicked and yelled for so-many-years. When Kirk and friends come back (due to sensing this object "out there"), lo and behold! A new, gleamin' toy for Scotty. Of course, the Enterprise's memory would be like Spock's: temporarily gone.
