Back in the days of dating men I quite often asked men out.
I started asking out boys in my high school class. This was 73-75 by the
way. Some of them were quite surprised, most were flattered and it worked
out fine. In college and after college I had the same experience. In
some cases they weren't as interested as I was we quit seeing each other
after a short time. In other cases I found I wasn't as interested as I
thought I was and we quit seeing each other. I always figured that if
they had a strong negative reaction to me making the first move then their
consciousness was not feminist enough for me anyway and I would rather know
that up front.

One of the problems I saw as a woman initiating dates or sex was that many
men do not know how to say no (especially, 16-26 year olds). It really helps
(in all kinds of relationships) to know that the person you are asking will
say no if they are not interested in whatever you are asking.
