An number alone on a line is interpreted to refer to a particular article. Thus, subtracting 10 from your current article and putting that number alone on a line will skip back ten articles. Readnews ignores your .newsrc file and lets you read any article, but if you hit return after reading that one, it skips you forward to the next unread article.
