I wear mascara when I have short hair, because:
     1. It makes me look older, which counters some of the effect of
         the short hair making me look younger;
     2.  It's easy to put on;
     3. It doesn't need to be retouched during the day.

If 2 or 3 were not true, I wouldn't bother. I think I dress fairly nicely
for work, although comfort and convenience win out if they conflict with
looking nice (especially in winter). I think there are far too
many women who spend a lot of time on make-up and clothes to the point that
if it doesn't take them 1-1/2 hours to get ready in the morning
(and 10-15 mins. several times during the day to stay fresh looking)
they feel uneasy.

I think I started really disliking makeup when I noticed that a friend of
mine forgot to wear her blue eyeshadow one day and everyone, including
me, thought she looked sick. I remember thinking that she never looked
so terrible before we got used to seeing her with the make-up. There's
also a very pretty girl that I'm rehearsing with now, and last week
she started wearing makeup. I could see it was well done, but it really
spoiled her appearance because all you noticed was that she had make-up on.
I'm sure in about a month or two if she walked in without it everyone would
would think she looked sick.

I do wear more make-up sometimes when I'm going out on the town. Somehow
it makes me feel more festive if I get into a costume that's very different
from my everyday thing.
