Actually the cited quote in my dictionary is

"this vale of dross and tears"
      ----

"vale" means a valley or dale, ie. a PLACE.

A veil is something one wears.

I suppose a veil *could* be made of tears, but it is hard to see how
one could "pass through" such a thing.

This is NOT intended as a flame, but rather offered in the interest
of general respect for historical quotes. I've made worse gaffs myself.
