I have a 76 Toyota Corona wagon with automatic transmission
and 20R, 2.2 L, engine that I bought last November.
When I had just got it, it idled very fast in N or P.
But if I shifted it to Drive, the idle speed felt normal.
The carb was replaced a year ago before I bought.
I adjusted to spec which is 800 rpm in P or N.
However, this adjustment made it idle at very low rpm
and it was unstable in Drive.

After driving it for half a year, I experienced
stalling during normal cruise or idle in Drive.
At that time , I found the gas filter clogged.
After replacing the gas filter, it ran fine for a while.
Then the stall during idle problem came back. I checked timing,
dwell, and fuel filter, and adjusted the carb again. No help.
A garage checked it "with computer" and said the carb should
be replaced. Since the carb is quite new, I hate to waste it.
My guess is that I might have contaminated the carb while
changing the fuel filter. The idle fuel supply may have
dirt in it. The fuel pump is electric and works fine.

My questions are: why the idle rpm drops a lot when shift
from Park to Drive? And what in a carb can be damaged or
worn by dirty fuel? Can I avoid replacing carb by rebuilding?
Or can I avoid taking the whole carb apart to rebuild by just
cleaning some fuel passages?

All suggestions are appriciated.
