As an additional point to the ABC coverage:

The U.S. got 180 hours of Olympic coverage, Aussie got about 230,
New Zealand about 280, and the U.K. 250. (source: The L.A. Times)
Add to that the fact that these other countries have MUCH fewer commercials
(some not at all, e.g. U.K. since it was the BBC), and you will see that
the U.S. got a very small amount of Olympic T.V.
That of course is why ABC showed only U.S. althletes. There wasn't time for 
the others.
