Re: the use of matter transmitters to dress you on the way to the 
theater and cleaning up your insides:

Larry Niven's novel "A World out of Time" uses displacement booths for 
just such a purpose.

In one scene, our hero jumps into a displacement booth and pushes the 
button, trying to get away from the bad guys. Much to his suprise, he 
goes no where, but he notices that a cloud of 'stuff' appears in the 
booth across the room. He runs off, and later we find that the colour 
is returning to his hair, etc...
