The directory-scanning routines, directory(3), have moved from their
own library (-lndir) to a spot in the C library. The basic reason is
making them easier to use. What triggered this was the observation
that getwd(3) is very hard to use right now, because the interlibrary
dependencies between it and the directory library don't work right.
