I remember the referenced story when it first appeared in print: it was a
quarter page newspaper ad placed by a big oil company.  I think in that
context it look like some kind of threat.

Ahh, yesss. They threaten us by threatening to go out of business. That's
the neat thing about capitalism vs. socialism. With capitalism, you *can*
choose to not work (and probably starve). With socialism, not working is
anti-social, so you're forced to work for someone else's gain. This is
called slavery.
