Um, I think I might need to make a small explanation:

GEORGE  =  $  ( :-), ok?)			LSChabot  =  !

$ I'm personally VERY straight. I think gays either have a hormonal
$ imbalance (very small percentage) or are mentally disturbed.(much larger
$ percentage) HOWEVER I do respect and will fight for their right to
$ carry on their lives as they see fit. This is basic requirement of freedom.

And then I said

! This outlook on single life, as expressed in phrases like "in the market" and
! "fork over the bucks for her", is a rather depressing one, and I think is
! a sign of some mental disturbance. [and I think I then went on to parallel
GEORGE's remark about carrying on lives, but with some stinger about
as long as it's not around me]

Probably by the time most of you got mine, GEORGE's letter was not quite so
fresh in your mind (or minds), so the parallelism, which was supposed to be
humorous and soften the stab a bit, was lost. Hmm, let me take this chance
to improve it...

! ... a sign of hormonal imbalance or mental disturbance.

Now, I never saw anyone asking if Chuq was "going to pick up on this one"
when GEORGE told us his opinions of the reasons for homosexual behavior.
[um, and let me know if I missed some letters, okay? honest.]
Both GEORGE's opinions and mine were aired in a forum in which we both knew
people of the persuasion we were talking about would be listening. I can
find reasons to show that my letter wasn't more personally directed than
GEORGE's: although mine quoted GEORGE's letters and talked about the
attitudes expressed therein (and I didn't mean to give the impression that
I thought GEORGE was the only one with these attitudes); GEORGE's letter
that is quoted at the top mentioned Trish in the title, and talked about the
infamous Trish statement about adult male behavior; both letters began
with a somewhat condemning opinion.

So, why the disparity here? Why is the plaid warlock being called on this
one and not the other? Survey time!

  1) GEORGE's attitudes about gays are more accepted than LSChabot's criticism
of commerce. [probably. sad, but true.]

  2) Adult male behavior is not to be examined. [Especially not by someone
whose first name is "Lisa", let alone by 10 year old female martians.]

  3) My actions were inappropriate, because:

3a) I was rude (and ruder than I thought)	[probably. I try.]

3b) Women shouldn't criticize men directly, but be supportive.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Lest anyone get too out of whack, let me say I
said these things for us to think about, not to make pointed remarks about
*anyone*. On the other hand, I do believe them to be widely held opinions.
Not correct (except 3a), but ...
