Upon reflection, and after some experiments (I replied repeatedly to my own posting), I have verified that Dave and Russ are correct - AS LONG AS YOU END THE EDIT SESSION "NORMALLY". That is, delete the "To:" line (probably the first line), then quit the editor as though you intended on sending the text. What I had done was to try to abort the editor (in vi by typing ":q!") which had caused the original header block supplied by readnews (with an intact "To:" line but no message body) to be sent.
