The following book seems to be a good guide to New England country inns:

A Guide to the Recommended Inns of New England
	by Chapin and Squier
	Globe/Pequot (?)

I like this book because it does NOT attempt to rate the establishments
listed therein. Rather, the authors claim to have stayed personally
at every inn listed and are willing to recommend them all. Each one
usually gets a page or so, whose purpose is to tell you what it's like
to stay there. If your favorite is missing, that doesn't mean they
dislike it -- perhaps they just haven't gotten there.
