You miss the point that Morbius was also a Time lord, and as such, had
previous regenerations.  The unknown faces were those of Morbius'
earlier regenerations.

The theory I have about the contest is that through force of will, one
participant forces the other back through time to his beginnings.
That is why they went backwards chronologically.  The way that it can
kill is through pushing the other back to start (birth) (conception)
to where the other does not live, and therefor doesn't.
