I didn't see the article to which <415@unm-cs> was a followup,
but the followup stated that they couldn't produce several
Troff characters on their Linotron 202 (Mergenthaler)
phototypesetter.

The characters mentioned were the `floor' & `ceiling' chars.
used by eqn, and the `not' char. used by gosh-knows-who.

Well, since all these guys are made from line segments,
horiz. & vert., you should be able to construct them using
the electronic rule generation primitives of the 202.
