After seeing Brain of Morbius for the 3rd time, I concluded that
the faces pictured during the mind-bending contest were indeed
supposed to represent the Doctor at various stages. This clearly
contradicts the well known fact that the doctor has had only 5 (now
6) generations, so maybe it was a slip on the part of the writer
(like putting the food-vendors in the transporter room in Startrek).

Morbius was winning the contest (as his gloating suggested), but,
as the Doctor planned, the excessive mental activity caused a buildup
of static electricity in Morbius's brain-case and forced Morbius to
withdraw from the contest. The sudden release of his brain-lock
left the Doctor unconscious.
