The point about things economically getting worse before getting
better has to be intrinsically obvious.  Society has a lot of mass
inertia.  (Definition for the nit-pickers out there:  When dealing
with the forces exerted by millions of people, it is impossible to
immediately force a change "on the dime" because of the inertia.  If I
may draw an analogy, think of trying to stop a train.)  

Our economy had a lot of negative velocity.  Reganomics applied a
positive acceleration, which first slowed the downward trend and then
reversed it to a positive trend.
