One important thing to remember though: it is not legally binding as far as the IRS (or, I believe, the courts). You may find an example in Pub 17 that reads like it was written with you in mind, the people at the IRS may agree, but if that's not the way the law actually interprets it, you're SOL. I know, it happened to me several years ago. One good note, however, if the error is actually in Pub 17, the IRS usually won't hit you with interest/penalties (note the word usually). -- Mark J.
