Query about Hashed-Directories:

Has anyone out there done anything about implementing hashed-directories
in UN*X? We have a use for directories containing 2000-30000 files,
and the sequential-search in opening them is SLOW.

Yes, there are problems with such large directories (e.g. the shell
has trouble expanding "*"), but the advantages would outweigh the
disadvantages, if opens were efficient.

Please answer via mail, if there is sufficient interest, I will summarize.
Thanks in advance.
