Thanks to those who responded to my question about carriage controls.
Most recommended writing my own filter.  R. Kolstad (allegra!parsec!kolstad)
sent a copy of his filter.  Mike Brown (sdcsvax!kpno!brown) and
David Wasley (ucbvax!dlw) pointed out that I could use

	open(unit=6, form='print')

early in my program, and -lI77uc on my f77 (library libI77uc.a)
to achieve the results.  David says that library is standard in 4.2bsd.
If INQUIRE is later used on this file, it also returns form = 'print'.
