They were called "erp-cups". There was also a manufacturer of private planes in those long-past days known as Aercoupe. I'm sure you can guess by this time what their nickname was. I always wondered if there was a connection between this unfortunate circumstance and their no longer being with us (if indeed they aren't--I haven't heard of them since).
