For anyone interested, ANSI X3.4 (ASCII) is being revised, changing the
format and text of the standard to be in close conformity to ISO 646-1983.
Although the text has been changed considerably, there was no intention of
significantly changing any technical aspect of the standard from ASCII-1977.

This is the basic 7-bit or 8-bit ANSI standard for ASCII code. X3.41 con-
tains the method of extending and the extensions to the ASCII code.

Some of the names of characters have been changed slightly to be in closer
conformity with ISO 646-1983 and to avoid ambiguity (e.g. 'opening' and
'closing' have been replaced with 'left' and of the symbols.)

The rewrite is presently committee document X3L2/84-18, being submitted to
the X3L2 committee membership for approval to send to X3 for further pro-
cessing (and publishing by ANSI for public comments).
