How about the guy who got up to go to the john when something from
the sky (ice from a plane, a meteorite, etc., it's not important
what) went through the roof and destroyed the bed.  Does that mean
you should sleep in the john?

Just because one particular type of accident is fatal with seatbelts but
not without is no reason to not wear them.  The times where they help
are much more frequent.  Unless you plan to drive off a cliff, that is.
