The encryption-box story sounds like another version of
the Lost Magic Thingie legend which (I suspect) a folklorist
could trace back several thousand years. Haven't you heard
about the magic pill that turns water into gasoline that the
oil companies suppressed and the 100mpg engine that the
backyard inventor foolishly sold to General Motors (who've
been keeping it secret ALL THESE YEARS)? Genuine Working
Ideas have a way of breaking secrecy.
