   I believe that in the US, all large (> $10,000 ) deposits
must be reported to some central authority by the banks. The
rational behind this, was that people who engage in certain
criminal activities such as drug dealing tend to collect large
amounts of cash.  I am told that not long ago, it was not
uncommon for people to walk into Florida banks, and deposit
really prodigious amounts of cash.  Of course this strategy
really doesn't help when dealers get smart enough to
spread the deposits amoung many accounts so that none are
over the limit.
