The front carriers are fine up to about 6 months.  I couldn't use the
Gerri either, but had another type that was usually comfortable.  After
6 months, babies have enough `starch' in them them to switch to a frame
back carrier (I used a Gerri).  My girls loved it, and it was much
easier than fighting stairs with a stroller.  They used it until they
were each about 3, at which point they wouldn't fit and I was getting
tired.
