As a general rule, the thinner videotapes (both Beta and VHS types)
are only really safe to use on the newer VCR's.  Older machines were
not designed with such tapes in mind.  Clogging of AUDIO heads is
very unusual, since the main head is fixed and not putting as much stress
on the tape as the spinning video heads.  However, I've seen bad
lots of both Beta and VHS tapes -- probably the result of poor storage
conditions by the retailer in most cases.
