Dr. John Foderaro, University of California, Berkeley,
will speak on ``The Language of the Year Where Strong
Typing Means Freedom''.

TIME: 3:30 PM

ROOM: MC 5158

ABSTRACT

The programming language Newspeak was designed to sup-
port the programming of algorithms over abstract data
types that are used in algebra and analysis. It is not
limited to such an application, however. Newspeak com-
bines the many advantages of a type safe language with
the expressiveness of a language with a type hierarchy
(such as Smalltalk). In this talk, I will describe the
Newspeak language and compare it to existing languages.

Coffee and refreshments will be served at 3:00 PM.
