Building "home-brew type hardware" for the TI 99/4A is problematic
because TI, bless their greedy little hearts, installed Device Service
Routines in ROM on the peripheral cards. Even if you built your RS232
none of your software would recognize it as being in existence.
On the brighter side, TI's bail out may be the best thing that ever
happened to the 99/4A. Corcomp has apparently purchased the rights
to the 99/4A hardware from TI and have already shipped the first of
their RS232 cards for about $80. Of course there is always the problem
of where do you put said card. Finding TI expansion boxes is none too
easy these days. Rumor has it that Corcomp is also coming out with a
super expansion box with on-board dual density disk controller, RS232
and Centronics ports, and 32K Memory expansion. The box will have 3
empty slots for additional memory or whatever. The rumored price is
slightly over $300 retail.

                                   Vive the TI Underground,
                                   Larry
