Canadians don't consider themselves to be Americans?  That's interesting...

The people of Central and South America most emphatically DO consider
themselves Americans, and are usually quick to correct any U.S. citizen
who implies otherwise.

It's unfortunate that there is no better word for citizens of the U.S.
(I know, I know, all the Canadians have LOTS of better words to suggest...)
We can't very well say "United Stations," can we?  I can certainly
understand that equating "American" with "U.S. Citizen" can cause 
resentment.
