Erik and Gordon, I agree with the two of you  concerning
the upturn of the economy due to a stimulated industrial
complex.....BUT, consider other factors which have stimulated
the economy such as the auto industry, housing, and consumer goods.
When the GNP is at 4.9% (highest since 78), the military complex is not
'holding the fort' (I couldn't resist) alone.

A straight percentage tax on income would not be a workable
solution. What would all of the non-profit organizations say
when suddenly donations were not pouring in? I think that you
would find that these organizations have a powerfull enough
lobby to stop any such legislation. 

Lastly, to have individual taxpayers decide how their tax
dollars are spent would be foolish. Remember, the largest
amount of tax revenue comes from the smallest percentage of people,
and, quite frankly, these poeple would not be willing to put
dollars on the table for the needy, etc.
