All workers in a factory near Gdansk are forced, of course, to
belong to the local party and go to weekly party meetings. The
guy who's in charge, a low party functionary, begins to harangue
the members at one of these meetings for their poor attendance.
"YOU!" he yells at one guy, "Who is Andropov?" The guy admits he
doesn't know. The leader says, "See! if you came to these meetings,
if you studied, you would know that Andropov was the head of the
Soviet Union and was very important to us!" He picks out another
member. "YOU! Who is Jarluzelski?" The member admits he doesn't
know who he is. "Ah!" the leader says, "You don't attend, you
don't study, ... , you don't even know the name of the head of the
Polish government!" Suddenly a small voice from the back of the
room calls out, "Who's Novak?" "I..I don't know responds the leader.
The small voice in the back answers, "If you didn't spend so much
time out at these meetings you'd know that Novak is going out with
your wife!"
