There is no way to find out what a scroll is without drinking it.

P.S.: If you figure out how to drink a scroll, please let me know.

Seriously though:  If you play Rogue enough, you will develop a second sense
about unidentified potions of raise level;  it is often easy to suspect
when you have picked one up.
I'm not sure why, except that drinking a potion of raise level at the wrong
time is one of the most painful mistakes you can ever make in a game of Rogue.
