Maybe this will help.  This addition to my .login file allows me to
append my .signature file to mail replies with a single character
command: "V".  And, it works outside of the news s/w; you can
use it for all of your mail.  Note: this works with sys 3.
I think minor mods are required in the syntax for other versions.
Check your shell documentation.  As usual, "^M" means Control-M, etc.

	setenv EXINIT 'map V :$r /usr/jeff/.signatureMO^D----^['

This also undoes the "vi" bug which causes it to think a file has not
been modified following a ":w" or ":r" command (the insert of "-----"
does it.)  Isn't Unix great?  You can mold it to fit any whims!
