Car owners were interviewed, I suppose with a pre-defined set of questions. Their cars were all about a year old, old enough to have had some problems but unlikely to have fallen apart due to old age. This seems to me like a good survey method. Generally the US manufacturers ranked Ford (best), Chrysler, GM, AMC for the 1982 model year (latest surveyed).
