On the other hand, I know people who can't figure out how to use the tab key on a regular typewriter. I don't know about CMU, but at Dartmouth the vast majority of students aren't engineers. For the Dartmouth student the ability to write papers on the machine, access the library catalog, and do a relatively modest amount of programming (in, I suppose, True Basic) should suffice.
