The doctor (Boyce?) was too Marcus Welbyish, while McCoy's downhomeness is counterbalanced by his cynicism an activity in so many landing parties... You won't find this out by comparing "The Cage" to "WNMHGB", as McCoy wasn't in the latter, either. He was not added until after both pilots.
