If the circuit is inductive (L) the voltage (E) leads the current (I), and E comes before I in the word ELI. If a circuit is capacitive (C), the reverse applies; current leads voltage, hence ICE. Remembering this is important for numerous reasons, especially power factor computation. The amount of real energy a circuit is dissipating depends on the relative phase of the voltage and current. A capacitor will correct the power factor for an inductive circuit, and vice versa. 2) What do bad boys do, and to whom does this not apply? a:This refers to a well-known mnemonic for the resistor color code. It's not taught any more -- and rightly so -- because it is offensive to women. I have appended it here in rotated form for this reason. As to the practice of the bad boys, it doesn't apply to Violet. I've yet to hear a non-sexist replacement that really sticks.
