So how did it all come out up there in Grand Canyon? The following article
(quoted without permission) appeared in the San Jose Mercury 28 June 1977.

SLOTH-DUNG FIRE OUT AFTER ONE-YEAR BURN

    GRAND CANYON, Ariz. (AP) --
Park rangers reported Monday that the year-long fire fed by dung from the
extinct Shasta ground sloth in a Grand Canyon cave has burned itself out.

The fire, discovered smoldering in the remote Rampart Cave last July 14,
threatened to destroy the last known source of information on the Shasta sloth,
which disappeared about 11,000 years ago.

So it goes. That's all, folks!
