DAF stood for - surprise, surprise - (Van)Doornes AutoFabrik (or whatever the Dutch for Van Doorne's Auto Factory was). DAF was later bought out by Volvo (I'm not sure whether Volvo owns Van Doorne Transmissie, but they do own the former DAF).
