The Challengeer was not oriented so that the crew could see the PAM burn; NASA has always kept the shuttle turned away to avoid windshield damage. However, a camera was mounted on the end of the RMS and pointed so that it could capture the PAM burn on film. That is how NASA and the astronauts saw the firing.
