It's true that Stalin and his successors have tried to use the vocabulary of socialism to justify their material privileges and their abrogation of political rights in the Soviet Union. But this is certainly not an indictment of Marxism or socialism. For a Marxist analysis of the rise of the reactionary bureaucracy in the Soviet Union, I refer you to "The Revolution Betrayed" by Leon Trotsky (Pathfinder Press, 1972, translation by Max Eastman, first edition 1937).
