``GLIDE  -  An  Implementation  of  a Family of General
Linear Methods.''

ABSTRACT

Most algorithms currently  used  for  the  solution  of
stiff  initial  value  problems are based on either the
BDF methods of  Curtis  and  Hirschfelder  or  implicit
Runge-Kutta  methods.   Many  of the characteristics of
these two classes of methods are combined in the  class
of  general linear methods.  GLIDE is an implementation
of a family of general  linear  methods  introduced  by
Butcher.   Questions  pertaining  to  the  stability of
these methods, the practical estimation of errors,  and
their  implementation  in a variable stepsize, variable
order algorithm will be considered.  Work on this  pro-
ject  is  being  carried  out jointly by Kevin Burrage,
John Butcher and Fred Chipman at the Department of Com-
puter Science, Auckland University.
