56Kbps is what is currently used for digital transmission of ordinary-quality
phone circuits.  I'm not sure whether it's 8 bit samples at 7KHz or 7 bit
samples at 8KHz.  Regardless, you should be able to swipe one bit each
sample for digital transmission, giving 7 or 8Kb synchronous concurrently
with voice which isn't too much noisier.  You'd lose some of that potential
speed converting between synch and asynch.
