This clearly contradicts the well known fact that the doctor has had only 5 (now 6) generations, so maybe it was a slip on the part of the writer (like putting the food-vendors in the transporter room in Startrek). Morbius was winning the contest (as his gloating suggested), but, as the Doctor planned, the excessive mental activity caused a buildup of static electricity in Morbius's brain-case and forced Morbius to withdraw from the contest.
