Mr. Haggerty, you can get lower case on the Apple II in software using the
hi-res character generator program in the Applesoft Toolkit.  The scrolling
looks a bit funny, but the HRCG (as it's known) has a lot of nice features,
the chief one being that it supports multiple fonts. If you want to go the
hardware route, all the 80-column cards that I know of allow lower case, and
if you want to stick with 40 columns, there are a number of keyboard/display
enhancers available.
