These days the liquid cooled units with the shafts are less prone to breakdown, plus they are much easier to maintain (not to mention quiter to ride). Shaft drive can get pretty hairy in the corners, and is a typical dog "out of the hole"(off the line), but nevertheless you don't have to tighten/replace it. I had lived approximately 29mi from the middle of nowhere up in Wis., enjoyed terrorizing several backroads with 1 liter freinds. I prefer not to ride in the dark, although it is almost unavoidable. Formerly of the legal racing persuasion... Wear a helmet, but make sure it is a good one. Got a cheap head - buy a cheap helmet.
